From the beginning of the album’s rollout, it was clear that Luke Combs was playing for keeps with the release of The Way I Am. After diverting from his typical formula back in 2024 with the release of his incredibly personal album, Fathers & Sons, some fans were questioning whether the “Hurricane” singer still had the ability (or desire) to deliver the massive, stadium-level hits he built a career on over the past 9 or so years.
It’s pretty clear that Combs was aware of this notion. In fact, he’d tell Apple Music’s Kelleigh Bannen upon the release of The Way I Am’s lead single, “Back in the Saddle,” that the song and album itself were a reminder to fans that he can still “kick your teeth in” with some classic, crowd-pleasing anthems
“It’s not an arrogance thing. It’s this mindset you need; you have to have this unwavering confidence in yourself to just keep going and to succeed. My mindset is, ‘Let me make you remember if you can’t.’ Just ’cause I don’t make enough TikToks doesn’t mean I can’t kick your teeth in, ’cause I can. That’s the mindset.”
It’s safe to say that mindset paid dividends for Combs. Back on March 20th, Combs finally released the sprawling, 22-song album, which he called the biggest of his career, to some massive success both commercially and critically. Fans have been absolutely loving it, praising Combs for blending his tried and true style on standouts such as “My Kinda Saturday Night,” “Daytona 499” and “Alcohol of Fame” with some unique tracks like the gorgeous Alison Krauss duet, “Ever Mine,” as well as “Be By You” and “Give You Away.”
The Way I Am is off to an incredible start for Combs, debuting at #1 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart, selling 101,000 equivalent units in its first week. Most weeks, it would have been a shoo-in for the #1 spot on the all-genre Billboard 200; however, the “1, 2 Many” singer was blocked by Korean superstars, BTS, and their return album, ARIRANG, which debuted at #1 with a staggering 641,000 total units.
Debuting at #2 on the Billboard 200, The Way I Am marks Combs’ seventh Top 10 record on the all-genre chart, following the likes of Fathers & Sons (#6), Gettin’ Old (#4), Growin’ Old (#2), What You See Is What You Get (#1), The Prequel (#4) and This One’s for You (#4). Additionally, the album debuted at #2 on Billboard’s Top Streaming Albums and Top Album Sales, selling 23,000 physical units across the country.
Though there was some doubt on whether or not Combs “fell off” over the past few years, I think that the quality of The Way I Am and its early success chart-wise laid any of those doubts to rest. It’s pretty safe to say that Combs is still one of the biggest superstars in the genre today, and today’s Top 2 entry all-genre proves it once again.
Before you go, listen to one of the standouts from the record, “Daytona 499.”
