Big changes have hit Taylor Sheridan’s spinoff show featuring the legendary Samuel L. Jackson.
Ever since the rumors of Jackson’s Tulsa King character Russell Lee Washington Jr. getting his own show first started, there’s been a lot of question marks around the series. Will it happen? Will the plans fall through? Where will it take place? And what will the show be called?
There for a while, the working title was “NOLA King,” and it was expected to be based in New Orleans, Louisiana. That would have been quite the environment for Sheridan to explore, especially with Samuel L. Jackson’s character, who was first introduced in Season 2 of Tulsa King.
But recent reports from Variety suggest that the spinoff will be abandoning the “NOLA King” name, thus shifting to a different setting for the series as well.
Paramount+ announced earlier this week that the spinoff with Jackson will be moving forward. That’s the good news. The bad news? They are shifting from “NOLA King,” and plan to call the new show “Frisco King,” which obviously implies that the show will be set in Frisco, Texas instead of New Orleans.
That might be a bummer to some, but there’s more good news to offset that change of setting. Paramount Television Studios president Matt Thunell revealed that Sheridan will write the entire first season of the upcoming spinoff:
“We are honored to have Taylor Sheridan write the first season of ‘Frisco King’ and bring to life Samuel L. Jackson’s iconic character. Having him pen all episodes of the season with his singular voice will be a treat for fans of ‘Tulsa King’ and audiences around the world.”
Considering he’s handed off writing duties on other spinoffs (instead opting to just be an executive producer on shows like Marshals), that’s a big win for fans of the Taylor Sheridan universe.
And according to Variety, though the show will most likely be set in Frisco, Texas, insiders are saying that the series will briefly visit New Orleans and the surrounding area before setting up shop in Frisco. When you factor in that production is set to take place in Fort Worth, Texas next month, that makes sense (even though it’s definitely a bit of a let down).
Jane Wiseman, Paramount+’s head of originals, is thrilled for the upcoming project, and is excited to get it in front of fans:
“Taylor Sheridan continues to build worlds that attract some of the most iconic talent working today, and ‘Frisco King’ is no exception. Having Samuel L. Jackson step into this universe is a testament to the scale and ambition of the storytelling Taylor is crafting. We’re thrilled to expand this storyline with such a powerhouse creative team and cast on Paramount+.”
When will fans get a chance to see the Samuel L. Jackson-led show? Like I mentioned earlier, it’s reportedly going to start production in March of 2026. It was originally supposed to get started in “Early 2026,” so that might be a bit of a set back. That being said, if you go by the usual turnaround time for other Taylor Sheridan shows, it should have a chance to air in Late 2026, but most likely Early 2027.
