I’m sure football fans will love that.
According to a new report, Bad Bunny reportedly plans to make a big political statement with his performance at the Super Bowl next month, including wearing a dress to honor the LGBT community.
We’re just a couple of weeks away from Super Bowl LX, which kicks off on Sunday, February 8 at Levi’s Stadium in California. And while we won’t know who’s going to be playing in the big game until after this weekend’s conference championship games, there’s already been plenty of controversy over the halftime show.
The global superstar and Puerto Rican rapper, whose real name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, has been famously outspoken against President Donald Trump, and even announced that he wouldn’t be touring in the United States due to the president’s immigration policies.
Naturally his selection to headline the Apple Music halftime show led to plenty of backlash from conservative football fans, who believe he was chosen as a middle finger of sorts to President Donald Trump.
Even the president himself weighed in on the halftime show:
“I don’t know who he is. I don’t know why they’re doing it — it’s, like, crazy. They blame it on some promoter they hired to pick up entertainment. I think it’s absolutely ridiculous.”
But NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell previously voiced his support for Bad Bunny and dismissed criticism of his selection as the halftime performer:
“He’s one of the leading and most popular entertainers in the world. That’s what we try to (choose). It’s an important stage to us. It’s an important element to the entertainment value. It’s carefully thought through. I’m not sure we’ve ever selected an artist where we didn’t have some blowback or criticism.
It’s pretty hard to do when you have literally hundreds of millions of people that are watching. We’re confident it’s going to be a great show. He understands the platform that he’s on, and I think it’s going to be exciting and a united moment.”
The controversy even led to Turning Point USA, the organization founded by the late Charlie Kirk, to announce that they would be staging an alternate, pro-America halftime show this year. (Since the initial announcement though, there hasn’t been any update on the show and the performers haven’t been announced).
Well the latest reports about Bad Bunny’s plans for the halftime show might even have more people reaching for the remote to find the Turning Point USA halftime show.
According to Radar Online, who reportedly spoke to a stylist involved with Bad Bunny’s halftime show, the rapper plans to wear a dress during the show to “honor Puerto Rican queer icons and generations of drag, resistance and cultural rebellion.”
“He loves controversy. He lives to push envelopes. He is 100 percent going to wear a dress. A political thunderbolt disguised as couture.”
Another source revealed that the NFL has not approved, and is not even aware of, his plans for the halftime show:
“He’s not playing it safe. The NFL has no idea what’s coming. Zero…
Let them complain. The dress is already being sewn.”
Can’t wait…
To add to the speculation that the NFL is trying to send a message to Trump with this year’s Super Bowl, the league also announced that Green Day would be performing the Super Bowl opening ceremony, which kicks off the broadcast a couple of hours before the game starts.
Green Day has also, of course, been outspoken critics of President Trump, calling him a “fascist” and even taking a shot at the president’s MAGA agenda by changing the words of “American Idiot” to “redneck agenda” during a New Year’s Eve performance in 2017.
It definitely seems like the NFL is trying to send a message to conservatives that they don’t need to bother watching the Super Bowl this year, just a year after Trump became the first sitting president to attend the game in person.
