The Katy Perry PR free fall continues.
The “I Kissed A Girl” singer was one of the hottest names in all of music in the late 2000s and early 2010s. She’s a certified hitmaker (or at least she was) considering she has nine No. 1 Billboard hits. Not a lot of those have come in the past couple of years though, and as her career has winded down… the outrage and controversy she’s found herself in has only multiplied.
There were a lot of jokes thrown her way when Perry was a part of the Blue Origin Space Mission back in April of this year. She was one of six women in total (Jeff Bezos’ significant other, Lauren Sánchez Bezos) that went up in a spacecraft on an 11-minute mission that’s purpose was to test out more flattering spacesuits for women.
Pretty cool advancements we’re making in space exploration, am I right? Katy Perry kissed the ground when she came back from the flight, which immediately landed her in meme territory.
I’d say that’s the cringiest thing Katy Perry has ever done in her life, but that would be a disservice to this latest news that involves the pop singer.
It’s being reported that Perry is currently in the midst of suing a disabled, 86-year-old veteran for $5 million. The issue stems from a dispute involving a $15 million house in Montecito, California, which is owned by the veteran named Carl Westcott and was purchased by Perry in 2020.
Five years ago, Katy and her ex (Orlando Bloom) offered to buy the eight-bedroom house, and their offer was allegedly accepted. But a few days prior to the sale, the 86-year-old who served in the Army decided that he wanted to back out of the deal. Westcott said that he didn’t have the mental capacity to make the sale and/or fully understand the contract, and cited that he was on pain medication (for a prior back surgery) when he signed the deal.
In Katy Perry’s defense, a judge ruled in her favor in December of 2023, saying that the veteran hadn’t presented evidence that he wasn’t in the right mental state to sign a deal. And the pop star’s lawyer argued that Westcott actually backed out of the contract because he had another offer for the home.
But by the time that ruling had come in, Westcott’s condition had deteriorated. In the years in between, the army veteran became bedridden with Huntington’s disease. If you are unfamiliar, it’s a degenerative neurological condition that leads to cognitive and psychological decline, and even affects fine motor skills. He’s actually in hospice at this very moment, and his family has argued that Katy Perry bringing the lawsuit to him has only made Westcott’s health worse.
While they are waiting for an apology, Katy Perry is awaiting a payment of around $5 million. It’s just a horrible look from the pop star, who has a net worth of over $350 million dollars. You’d think that she could put her differences aside and let go of this California property and the dispute… especially so the veteran’s family can make the most of what could be the final moments of his life in peace.
Stay classy, Katy.
