Talk about a jump scare.

The Sandy Spring Police Department in Sandy Spring, Georgia is currently going viral thanks to some body camera footage that they shared of one of their officers getting into a close call with a white-tailed deer. Officers responded to the area thanks to reports that two men were trying to break into vehicles, or at the very least, were walking around and seeing if car door handles were locked.

FOX9 shared the terrifying footage and described the incident as follows:

“A police officer got quite the shock when a deer suddenly bounded toward him during a search for suspects. The officer was sweeping his flashlight through a wooded area in Sandy Springs, Georgia, when the deer appeared, crashing into nearby bushes. Bodycam footage released by the Sandy Springs Police Department captured the officer’s startled reaction.”

Just put yourself in the shoes of this officer for a second.

You are responding to calls of two men trying to break into vehicles in Sandy Springs. Naturally, because it’s your job to protect and serve, you go to investigate, and you make sure to do a thorough job of it. That means that you go into the woods in the middle of the night and check to see if you can spot anyone lurking in the shadows.

Then, almost out of the blue, you hear the sound of something frantically running through the woods, stirring up dead leaves… and it’s getting closer. Your brain would probably just assume that it might be one of the people you are looking for. Before you can even really react, your flashlight reveals that it’s not a person. Instead, it’s an antlered animal barreling right towards you.

You’d probably say something like this too:

“Holy sugar dude.”

Yeah… I would have radioed in a “Code Brown” if I experienced something like this.

I find it funny that the officer was thoroughly searching the area up until the wild animal came running through the woods at him. After he narrowly dodged the deer, he let out a “Holy sugar” and proceeded to walk back up the stairs and presumably back to his squad car. And I don’t blame him one bit. That’d be enough flashlight-in-the-woods time for me too.

Fortunately, no one in the video was hurt. Well, the deer did leap pretty far down the hill, so I can’t speak on its current health. But most importantly, the police officer avoided disaster, and still has quite the story to tell… and the video to prove it. Horror movies try to capture this kind of terror and suspense and often times fall short.

All it really takes to make people make up alternative curse word phrases like “Holy sugar” is a flash light, a dark night, a deer in full-sprint mode, and a POV camera to capture it all. With everything considered, the police officer honestly handled this as cool as a cucumber. Sandy Spring Police Department must do a great job training their team to expect the unexpected.
