Love to see it.
Aaron Watson is a man of many talents. Obviously, the “Freight Train” singer has been a staple of the brilliant Texas country scene, scoring hits with tracks like “July In Cheyenne (Song For Lane’s Momma),” “Bluebonnets (Julia’s Song)” and “Outta Style” as well as famously scoring an independently-released #1 album on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart with 2015’s Underdog.
These days, Watson is still cranking out some killer tunes — especially on his newest release, “Pontiac (So Tell Me Momma).” With that being said, however, he’s been making a name for himself on social media, thanks in part to his “Tailgate Talks” series. Whether it’s the incredibly drawn-out Charley Crockett, Gavin Adcock and Zach Bryan beef, Beyoncé’s place in the genre, calling out Laci Kaye Booth for her “George F****** Strait” song or making fun of Warren Zeiders after an onstage outburst, Watson rarely holds back in these videos. Usually, a lot of these videos are all in good fun, especially considering the fact that Watson himself just wants to see young artists, particularly those from his home state of Texas, succeed.
Riding the waves of his newfound success online, Watson is setting his sights on a brand new series of videos on his YouTube channel — “Good Song.”
Unlike “Tailgate Talks,” which sees Watson give his commentary on all the silly drama going on in the genre today, “Good Songs” is focusing on something that matters — veterans and their mental health specifically.
According to the United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), in 2022 alone, there were 6,407 veteran suicides, which averages to nearly 18 per day. Couple that with growing fears of cuts to a plethora of different government programs, and the need for extra support for those who served the country. The Texas native recognizes this sentiment, but what is his plan?
Simply put, Watson wants to focus on the basics. In the Instagram post announcing the project, he’d emphasize focusing on the small things in life to ultimately let the veterans he’s highlighting from week to week feel seen. In an attempt to empower them, Watson will also take them on golf outings and cook them steak dinners before treating them to a VIP concert experience and ending the night with some titular “good songs.”
“The suicide rate amongst our heroes is so high, and we’ve got to bring that number down to zero. It starts with the everyday little things, reminding them of how much we appreciate their service and their sacrifice. But we’re going to take that a step further. We’re gonna take them to play golf, we’re gonna cook them a steak, we’re gonna get them some VIP tickets to a country concert and then we’re gonna end it with a good song. Y’all come tag along with us. It’s gonna be fun.”
It should go without saying that Aaron Watson is one of the most down-to-earth singers in the genre right now, and you love to see him using his platform to give back — especially to those who have served. The first episode of “Good Song” will debut this Friday, October 31st, at 10:00 a.m. CT on his YouTube channel.
