The Bill Belichick era in Chapel Bill Hill could be over before it really even got started.
The addition of the legendary (?) Bill Belichick as head coach was supposed to take UNC to new heights. Instead, the Tarheels football team has hit a new low, and Bill’s 2o25 college squad is one of the worst in the FBS.
North Carolina was embarrassed 48-10 in their season opener against TCU back on September 1, and now over a month into the season, they boast a 2-3 record with their only wins coming against Charlotte and Richmond (not exactly college football powerhouses). Against any formidable opponent? Bill and UNC have lost by double digits, and most recently lost to the Clemson Tigers 38-10.
UNC has put up 33 points against power conference opponents, and has allowed 120. In other words, things are really, really bad with the North Carolina football program.
And it seems like the writing is on the wall for UNC and Bill Belichick to go separate ways sooner rather than later. The only issue? If UNC were to fire Belichick without cause, they’d owe him over $20 million in a buyout. In case you didn’t know, sometimes the best job in the world is a fired college football coach.
But things are so bad over at North Carolina that Belichick is reportedly offering to help UNC work around the buyout. Sports journalist Ollie Connolly is reporting that if Bill can figure out an exit strategy (or in other words, a landing spot for him after leaving UNC), he’d trigger his own $1 million buyout.
Connolly has also added plenty about the disastrous situation that’s been unfolding behind the scenes at the University of North Carolina:
“Per sources: Bill Belichick has discussed buyout options with North Carolina’s hierarchy. Belichick has signaled a willingness to trigger his own $1 million buyout if he can find a soft landing with another team or in media.
Members of Belichick’s coaching staff have already spoken to other schools that are expected to be in CFB Playoff about taking on roles during the postseason. From one coach: ‘the rats are leaving the ship.’ Some staffers believe a change will come within two weeks.”
Poor play and reports of Bill “losing the team” aren’t the only things driving this potential separation.
There’s also murmuring of Belichick and UNC getting tied up in an investigation around recruiting and practice violations. That only makes Bill look worse, but actually could help North Carolina a bit. They could offer a substantially smaller buyout to the former New England Patriots head coach if he’s found guilty of violations, as Connolly explained:
“Reports of serious recruiting violations remain under investigation at UNC. Recruiting and practice violations have already been proven by the school, according to multiple sources. Using recruit violations to knockdown a coaches buyout has become a standard practice. If Belichick cannot find a landing spot to trigger his own buyout, he’s expected to accept a greatly reduced, compromised rate.”
Connolly also added that the coaching staff at UNC outside of Bill Belichick have been left in the dark on multiple occasions throughout the season. Bill’s communication with the team and the rest of the staff has allegedly been “weird” and “distant,” and when UNC went on their bye week, assistant coaches say they were unable to get in touch with Belichick.
The most damning part of the reporting? A UNC defensive assistant apparently had this to say when asked about Bill Belichick’s tenure and how the team has been treated since Bill took over:
“What we’ve done to these kids is f***ed up.”
Bill Belichick’s tenure as North Carolina’s head coach was expected to be a triumph, and advertised to be a masterclass. Instead, it’s been an unmitigated, absolute disaster, and calling it a dumpster fire could be an understatement. Now, it’s very likely that Belichick won’t get a “ride off into the sunset” retirement from coaching. It looks like it’ll be more of a “get your you-know-what out of town and don’t ever come back” kind of goodbye for the great Bill Belichick.
