This melts your heart, regardless of which team you’re cheering for.
Over the weekend, a fan in the University of Michigan’s Michigan Stadium captured the hearts of fans everywhere after going viral during the game. While most viral football fan moments often revolve around being overserved, getting into a fight, or being shirtless and painted up on the first row of the student section, this moment is far more wholesome.
During each Michigan home game, the university plays The Killers’ “Mr. Brightside” over the speakers, and the crowd sings along between the third and fourth quarters. The tradition was adopted by Wolverine fans in 2016 and has become a renowned tradition in the stadium.
The moment is so iconic that EA Sports College Football ’26 is bringing “Mr. Brightside” to the gaming universe.
Given that it’s a relatively new tradition, being less than a decade old, some long-time Wolverine fans are having to get used to singing the words of the famed song, which brings us to this wholesome moment from the game over the weekend. A fan caught a man holding up a piece of paper during the “Mr. Brightside” portion of the game.
What was on that piece of paper? A printed copy of the “Mr. Brightside” lyrics from AZ Lyrics. The elderly gentleman holds the paper proudly so he can sing along with the rest of Michigan Stadium, and so that he’s in the know with this new-ish tradition.
Are you kidding me?! I didn’t think I’d be starting my Monday sobbing for folks I didn’t know, but here we are. As an Oklahoma State University alum, if I saw a fan doing this while we sang Garth Brooks’ “Friends In Low Places,” I would have snot running down my face.
