Safe to say this family of grizzly bears had the right of way.
This stunning video comes out of the Kananaskis, Alberta area. If you are unfamiliar with where that it, it’s up in Canada in between Calgary and Banff National Park. Wildlife is abundant in Banff National Park and the Alberta, Canada area. Over 379 different species call the national park home, and grizzly bears are often spotted wandering throughout the beautiful landscape. More than four million people visit Banff each year to try and catch a glimpse of the variety of wild animals (like bears, lynx, and moose).
One person was driving in Kananaskis when they stumbled upon an incredible sight: a family of four grizzly bears all walking together, and taking up much of the roadway. Wild animals often utilize roadways and other trails carved out by humans. Why? It’s actually rather simple… it’s the road more traveled.
I’m sure you’ve heard plenty of inspirational quotes about taking the road less traveled. That’s great and all, but doesn’t always apply to the great outdoors. Just like us humans would do, wildlife often finds the path of least resistance and takes it. That’s why this mother grizzly was walking her three, mature cubs along the Albert roadway.
Grizzly bears are considered to be apex predators. Those grizzlies that are mothers – with their cubs around – are a step above that apex predator level. There’s likely nothing more dangerous in the world than a mama bear trying to protect her kiddos. Even the slightest perceived threat can cause a mother grizzly to charge and not think twice about it.
As I mentioned, these cubs looks to be rather large and grown. Typically, a mother grizzly will teach her little ones how to survive out on their own until they are around a year and a half to two years old. These cubs are definitely pushing that time frame, considering they are almost just as big as their mother.
They’ll probably be ready to take on the world in no time.
And in the video below, it looked like one of the cubs was ready to take on the car that was stopped on the side of the road. It stands up on its hind legs and impressively walks a couple of feet… while still staying behind its mother. It’s actually really funny, eh? The cub appears to be acting a bit like a tough guy, but doesn’t feel tough enough to get out in front of its mama.
Hilariously, the mother grizzly looks to turn around and scold the cub for standing on its hind legs. I think we’ve all seen a mom get on to her kiddo in public enough to know that’s exactly what’s going down in this footage. Sure, the cubs might be sizable, but this mama grizzly is still the one laying down the law.
All in all, it’s a breathtaking video to see this large of a grizzly family traveling together. I can’t imagine meeting this family of four on the road way… and fortunately, I don’t have to. It’s right here in the video below thanks to the Culture Alberta Instagram account. And no… I know what you’re thinking, but it’s not an AI video.
