Former country music star Granger Smith doing a deep dive.
Granger Smith shocked the country music world when he announced back in April of 2023 that he would be leaving country music to pursue a career in ministry. Smith conceded that the decision was incredibly difficult considering that he had dedicated so much of his life to his country music career, but he felt as though it was the right move after losing his his 3-year-old son River.
Since he left the music industry, he’s dedicated himself to ministry. One way he helps spread the Gospel is through his “Granger Smith Podcast,” which has over 700,000 subscribers online. A recent episode was titled “Is Donald Trump the Antichrist?” and explored an email that was sent in by a listener.
It read:
“I heard someone say that on Facebook and that really freaked me out. I know y’all talk about end times and stuff like that sometimes, but I wanted to hear your thoughts. I’m not trying to be disrespectful or political. I just genuinely don’t know and it’s been bugging me.”
Guess it’s always worth taking a second look at something you see on Facebook?
So Smith and his co-host – who is referred to as AntMan – started unpacking that quite complicated question. And the former country star didn’t just speak based on his opinions… he went straight to the word of God:
“Let’s use the Bible to figure this out. It is a good question. We have heard so many things about Trump. He is so polarizing that he draws all the analogies. We did the show, ‘Did God Save Trump?’ because of the bullet. The other day, I was on another show, and the lady wanted to talk specifically about that episode…
It’s just evidence that he is so polarizing. They’ll probably put that he’s the savior, too. We could probably have just as big an argument, ‘Is Trump Christ?’ Is he the Messiah to save the world? And on the other side, is he the Antichrist? To be one figure that draws those kinds of questions is crazy. The times we live in.”
Smith went on to specifically reference the book of John, which directly touches on the idea of something or someone being the “Antichrist.” They were able to somewhat confirm that the “Antichrist” isn’t a person, but rather a spirit:
“What we see right off the bat from John, at least according to this passage, is that the Antichrist is not one, singular future figure. I know a lot of people hold that view that he is one guy, and that he is coming.
But here the way John is speaking of him, and this is the time you are hearing Antichrist, it is a spirit. It is a spirit of many. Of those that deny that Jesus is the Christ. That is the spirit of the Antichrist instead of one.”
Smith and AntMan (feels weird saying AntMan) then concluded that President Donald Trump – albeit a divisive figure – doesn’t show any of the telltale signs and doesn’t match up with the characteristics necessary to be called the “Antichrist.” And they were able to reach that conclusion thanks to the scripture:
“I don’t see Trump as one that is performing great signs and wonders and leading people astray. I don’t see Trump as one who is doing great signs and wonders, prophesying false things, and leading people away from God. I don’t see that. Say what you want his politics and his moral character, he’s not. I don’t see that.
Based on scripture, there is no biblical reason to label Trump as the Antichrist or any one person. But we can say this, this is what the Bible does say, ‘The spirit of the Antichrist is present in anyone or anything that opposes or replaces Christ with anyone or anything.’”
Granger Smith is certainly covering some heavy topics with his podcast. He’s a long way from his country music star days, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. If he’s helping people discern whether or not President Trump is the “Antichrist,” I’d say that’s a helpful contribution to society.
