The Coldplay-jumbotron-cheating saga is still alive and well.
I wasn’t sure that this story would have the legs to make it to “Week 2” of virality. The clip that is now easily 2025’s most viral moment has reached “Hawk Tuah” levels of longevity. If it continues on this path, the now disgraced Astronomer CEO and the human resources chief he was caught with will have their own podcast in the next couple of months.
I’m sure that by now you’ve heard the news that Astronomer CEO Andy Byron was caught red-handed (allegedly) cheating on his spouse at a Coldplay concert. The story – albeit a very personal one at the root of things – has captured the intention of the social media world. It’s even become a jumbotron trend at other venues all across the country.
Take this one for example:
Hilarious.
If you haven’t seen the actual video already (do you live under a rock?), the viral clip from last week shows the jumbotron camera operator honing in on Byron and his work subordinate cuddled up at the concert. They quickly separated and tried to hide their faces, but the damage was already done. As you know, social media is forever, and one person just so happened to be recording the jumbotron when it all went down.
Coldplay frontman Chris Martin narrated what was unfolding in real time, and seemingly figured out what was happening in a matter of seconds:
“Oh look at these two. Oh come on, you’re okay. What? Either they’re having an affair, or they’re just very shy.”
Since then, there’s been a lot that’s played out. I could go into depth about it, or I could direct you to Whiskey Riff’s sprawling coverage of the viral moment. Let’s lay out a little chronological timeline, shall we?
-Astronomer CEO Andy Byron and his company’s HR officer are caught on the jumbotron together at a Coldplay concert
–Fake statement from the tech CEO goes viral online
-Other artists make jokes at their own concerts referencing the viral internet moment
-Astronomer announces investigation into the incident
–Astronomer CEO Andy Byron resigns from his position
Needless to say, this viral moment has had a choke hold on pop culture since the clip hit the internet, and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin is also playing a role in keeping the joke going. Only a day after the singer accidentally (and allegedly) outed the cheating couple, he was asking anyone that was shown on the jumbotron if they were a legitimate couple.
And now, almost a week removed from the incident, Chris Martin has figured out a work-around for the put-fans-on-the-jumbotron part of the show. The Coldplay frontman is actually giving people in attendance a heads up before the camera starts scanning the crowd, and something tells me these couple of sentences right here will be a mainstay for the rest of Coldplay’s tour.
With a comically sarcastic tone, he tells the crowd:
“We’d like to say hello to some of you in the crowd. How we’re gonna do that is we’re gonna use our cameras and put some of you on the big screen. So please, if you haven’t done your makeup, do your makeup now.”
