“Taylor & I Have Spoken” – Matthew McConaughey Breaks Silence On Long-Rumored ‘Yellowstone’ Collaboration

Matthew McConaughey has finally provided an update on that Yellowstone spinoff show he was rumored to be a part of… and he says something could still happen in the future.

It’s the crossover that fans of Taylor Sheridan shows have been waiting for, and was originally being shopped around as “2024.” Much like the 1883 and 1923 prequels dove into the past of the Dutton storyline, “2024” was supposed to continue the present storyline, and for quite some time, the star of “2024” was rumored to be Matthew McConaughey.

The fact that we’re currently in 2026 and we’re talking about a show titled “2024” should tell you all that you need to know about how the series never came to fruition.

There were reportedly contract disputes and a hang up where McConaughey wanted to see a script before he signed on. As we’ve heard plenty of times in the past couple of years, that’s not always how Sheridan works. Sometimes he picks the person first, then writes the story around the actor or actress.

It’s been over two years since we last heard anything about Matthew McConaughey joining the Yellowstone universe. And with the Michelle Pfieffer led The Madison and Dutton Ranch seeing the Yellowstone storyline continued in the modern day with Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser, many just assumed that one of those shows likely replaced the one that McConaughey was set to do.

But it was Hauser who initially gave fans hope, and said that his spinoff show and The Madison “had nothing to do with” the series that McConaughey and Sheridan had been workshopping. When he revealed that back in May, it was the first update on the potential show in over two years. That started to build hope back up once more, and this latest quote from McConaughey is sure to do the same.

During a conversation with The Playlist, the Academy Award-winning actor said that he and Taylor Sheridan still have a very good chance of working together, and often talk about what them collaborating could look like:

“It’s not any more of a thing than it was or probably any less of a thing than it was that did hit the headlines there for a while. Taylor and I have spoken and have continued to have conversations about what (it could be) and if that would be whatever. But nothing’s real yet.”

Nothing’s real… yet. To borrow an iconic line from Jim Carrey’s Lloyd Christmas character in Dumb and Dumber, “So you’re telling me there’s a chance?”

McConaughey and Sheridan seem like they would be a powerhouse duo. Just imagine the great McConaughey sitting horseback and waxing poetically about the mountains off in the distance, or the Texas landscape sprawled out in front of him (seems like McConaughey would be more comfortable keeping his Sheridan show in the Lone Star State).

His latest film, The Rivals of Amziah King, even had him play a character that’s in a bluegrass band (which led McConaughey to play an Ella Langley cover in real life). I only bring that up because Sheridan has a way with connecting his shows to the heartbeat of country music, so it may be nearing the time where all the stars align for he and McConaughey to work together.

When will McConaughey star in a Yellowstone or Taylor Sheridan series? Fans will have to continue to be alright, alright, alright with waiting, because that we don’t know. But this latest update does give a lot of hope to something finally working out.
