Texas Weatherman Is Dumbfounded After Massive Lightning Bolt Strikes Tower On Live TV

Anyone else obsessed with funny moments on news broadcasts?

While national news is completely unwatchable these days, local news continues to be an absolute goldmine of viral moments that bring me to literal tears of laughter at times. Where I grew up in Pennsylvania is responsible for at least three great viral moments: the “Apparently” kid, the Shamokin Dunkin’ Donuts fire, and the Call Back 16 segment where people complained about model train in the background, so maybe I’m eternally biased because these were such big moments to us growing up…

Here’s the Shamokin Dunkin’ fire:

More recently, who can forget the reason why this Cross Canadian Ragweed fan showed up to The Boys From Oklahoma show in Stillwater?

And what about the water main break in Delaware that made it look like this broadcaster had sprung quite the leak?

Okay, okay, one more before we move on… This one is truly the best…

How about Jim Vance and George Michael from NBC’s News4 in Washington DC completely falling apart watching a model fall not once, but twice on the runway? Oh gosh, I’m going to be laughing all day if I rewatch this one, but here we go.

It’s so good… Just so good.

Okay, I have to do one more.

“WHO ALL SEEN THE LEPRECHAUN SAY YEAHHH!!”

Well, we had another viral local news moment the other day in Central Texas, and though this one isn’t quite the laughing stock that some others are, it was a moment that was truly… shocking…

Hunter Williams is the Chief Meteorologist for KVUE News in Austin, Texas, and was showing a live feed of one of the Lonestar State’s incredible storms rolling through, when they captured a massive, and I mean massive, bolt of lightning that just so happened to strike a radio tower that he had just gestured at.

Both the lightning and his reaction to witnessing the moment, were incredible.

I mean my goodness, what a moment!

Maybe I’m just a weather nerd. Can’t help it, been that way since a kid when I started making my own barometers with mason jars and balloons (a great little hobby for your kids, you can thank me later) but is that not unreal timing? Not only did they have a camera on the area but they were broadcasting live when the bolt struck the tower, leaving it smoking and smoldering…

And how about Hunter’s reaction. Pure amazement. That “Did that just happen?” face while trying to remain professional. Quickly someone memed the moment and I’ll be using that quite frequently from now on because there’s some serious potential here.

Big shoutout to Hunter here. Now, it may have been a bit cooler if he lost his mind like this other weatherman did when he realized his map is a touchscreen, but hey, we’ll take what we can get out of our local news broadcasts.

Yes, I do sort of hate that I can just recall random news segments to fill out a blog post… It’s a talent, perhaps useless, but a talent nonetheless.
