What to expect when you’re expecting: Album edition.
Megan Moroney is spilling some important details about MM3. While the Emo Cowgirl has yet to announce her next studio record formally, fans think the date could be near as she’s ditched her signature blue from the Am I Okay? era and is testing out some new color palette. After the ACM Awards, some fans speculated that the Andie Anderson yellow-inspired look could be the color for this next chapter of music.
Moroney has also teased that the saddest song to appear on her next record is her fan-favorite unreleased track, “Wedding Dress.” The gut-wrenching ballad details how hard it has been for her to move on from a past flame. As a new man who seems like he could be her forever lover enters her life, she pleads to move on so she’s not missing an ex while in a wedding dress.

Although that song is a punch to the gut, Moroney recently shared with People Magazine on the AMA red carpet that the overall tone of MM3 will be more “light and carefree and happy.”
While talking to the outlet, she disclosed that she’s always writing, and because of that, she’s almost done with the writing for her next studio project. Moroney noted that she’s always got her pen to paper, so writing for her records comes very organically.
“I’m always writing. I mean, I would say that my next album is probably like 80% written.
I just try to live my life and write about it. So that’s kind of how this next album is shaping up, too. Just like the last ones — I was writing about my life experiences. So the strategy behind it hasn’t changed. It’s still the same.”
Although Moroney has shared that there will be fewer sad songs on this project, don’t fear, she’s not fully straying away from her Emo Cowgirl ways.
Moroney also opened up about how she finds strength in her songwriting, and it’s healing for her to know that the writing not only helps her but can also help her fans.
“There’s definitely strength in being painfully honest, even if it’s hard to talk about whatever it is. And I feel like I’ve got a fan base of younger girls that really look up to me.”
That sentiment rings true with a song that Moroney recently teased, “Beautiful Things.” Moroney’s niece inspired the song, and Moroney recalled looking at her, knowing that she’s so innocent but will one day have her heart broken, not by a boy but by her friends. It’s an experience that all women go through in their journey into adulthood, and it shapes the kind of friend you later become.
Moroney also shared in the caption of the song’s preview that she penned the tune for her niece to listen to when she has those feelings or is just having a bad day. When you take a second to digest the lyrics that Moroney flashes on the screen as she sings, you will see that she perfectly describes a shared experience all women and girls have gone through.
“You’re standing at your bathroom mirror
Cryin’ ‘What did I do?’ tears
Your friends are out and you’re right here
There’s a party, you didn’t know
You just found out from your phone
Did they not want you to go?
Oh yeah, you feel that twisting knife
Oh, I know it ain’t right…”
Based on what we know about Megan Moroney’s third album, just like her first two studio records, it sounds like it will be something special. Megan Moroney is on a roll and shows no signs of slowing down. Keep the sad cowgirl songs coming, Miss Moroney.
