It’s not about the size of the dog in the fight, it’s about the size of the fight in the dog.
A stray pupper that’s now named “Duke” had quite the eventful last couple of weeks. The young dog with no owner was first spotted on a neighborhood Ring camera in Brea, California fighting for it’s life against a pack of coyotes. Five aggressive wild canines approached the smaller Labrador retriever-German shepherd mix, attempting to make a meal out of the good boy.
But the good boy wasn’t going down without a fight on that good night.
The homeowner whose security camera was able to capture the footage says that the tense standoff went on for a good 45 minutes, before the coyotes finally left the tough-as-nails dog alone. You can see the puppy now named “Duke” keeping the fight in front of him and, against all odds, holding the coyotes at bay in the harrowing footage below:

Five dogs versus one dog doesn’t seem like a fair fight, and it wasn’t… for the five wild canines (somewhat of an attempt at a Chuck Norris-esque joke).
After putting up the valiant driveway performance, the doggo still had nowhere to go home to, which is arguably the saddest part of the story. But things didn’t stay somber for very long. The same homeowner that had captured the video with their driveway camera noticed that the young dog was still wandering around the neighborhood. So they called Orange County Animal Care who came and picked him up and took them to their local shelter.
The shelter gave the brave puppy the name “Duke,” and put him up for adoption. He was listed on their website, along with this description and video:
“Duke is a shy but friendly boy who loves hanging out with other dogs. Once he warms up, he enjoys doing zoomies, playing in the pool, and engaging with his handlers.”
Now, if you are to go to the link that used to act as Duke’s adoption page, it is no more. The message that appears instead? “Looks like this pet may have been adopted!” Talk about a whirlwind couple of weeks for the dog now named Duke. One minute, you are fighting for your life fending off a hungry pack of coyotes. The next? You are getting picked up and taken to a shelter, but not staying there for long evidently. All signs point towards him already being adopted by a family.
The story of him fighting off the coyotes in the driveway surely helped him get adopted, and I can’t think of a gooder boy (I know gooder isn’t a word) to deserve settling into a new home after all he’s been through than Duke. And he should make one hell of a guard dog…
