92-Year-Old Turns Down Million Dollar Offers To Sell Her Home Near Augusta National As Golf Course Seeks To Expand

Elizabeth Thacker

If I were 92 years old, I wouldn’t want to move either.

A woman named Elizabeth Thacker refuses to sell her home to the esteemed golf club and host of The Masters, after the country club has given her multiple million dollar offers to buy her land.

Thacker has lived in the home for 60 years, which is located less than a mile away from Augusta National Golf Club. In 2017, Thacker and her husband, Herman, went viral for not selling their 1959 house, and for good reason. It’s hard to imagine that Augusta National’s millions couldn’t buy this home.

The Thackers lived in the three-bedroom house, raising their children, and it served as a landing pad for their golf pro grandson, Scott Brown. The Thackers were approached before Herman Thacker died in 2019 at 86, and before his death, he told NJ.com that he had no intentions of selling the home, no matter how much the golf course offered them.

“Money ain’t everything.”

His wife added to this statement.

“We really don’t want to go.”

According to Yahoo News! property records indicate that the home was last valued at $338,026 in 2024, above Augusta’s median listing price of $215,000. Given that the golf course has money to burn and is planning to expand its golf course, I am sure that they have money to burn.

However, despite how much money they offer, Thacker still has no intention of moving. Her daughter told the outlet:

“Yes, we still own it, and Mom still lives there. She is very strong-willed.”

The Wall Street Journal reported that Augusta National has been in a buying frenzy since 2019 and spent $20 million over 20 years to grow its footprint by about three-quarters.

According to the Journal, a neighbor who was an 11-minute walk from the country club sold her three-bedroom home for $1.1 million, and the Thackers themselves sold another one of their homes for $1.2 million.

Golf enthusiasts have likely been walking by their home all week during The Masters tournament, and I am sure Elizabeth Thacker is smiling and waving at all the patrons, knowing that she has a very valuable piece of property.

Like I said, I don’t blame Thacker for not wanting to sell her home and move at her age. That’s a lot to not only uproot from the place that you’ve called home for 60 years, but to have to settle into a new space at 92 is a big ask. I would not be surprised if Augusta is ready to shell out big bucks once Thacker passes to snag that property, but given the Thacker family has not been willing to sell before, they might want to preserve their family’s history, keeping the house for themselves.

They can also make big bucks renting their homes to Masters visitors, cashing in on golf viewers who want to stay close to the famed golf tournament’s location.
