Giving the fans what they want.
Sturgill Simpson, aka Johnny Blue Skies (does anyone actually call him that?), is officially back on tour. After wrapping up the Why Not? Tour, Simpson and his band went across the pond to take their jam session-style concert to Europe, but now they are back stateside and ready to keep on rocking and rolling.
Over the weekend, Simpson closed out Georgetown, Texas’ Two Step Inn with a face-melting good set.

But if you’ve seen Simpson live, you know that his solo sets are much more extensive than a festival slot would allow. Because of this Simpson surprised fans adding kicking off the Who The F*ck is Johnny Blue Skies? Tour early at Stubb’s Austin.
The surprise show quickly sold out, leading to an incredible three and a half hour long set.
Not only was the show at Stubb’s a surprise, but the song that Simpson opened the set with was even a bigger surprise. Simpson performed “You Can Have The Crown” for the first time since 2015.
Before kicking off the set with the rocking song, Simpson shared that because Austin has always been good to him and the band, they wanted to give fans something special in return.
“All right, I don’t know, we’ve been waiting like 10 or 11 years to do this again. The city’s always been very, very good to us. We just wanted to stick around and say ‘thank you’ and play one more show for you guys. To mark the occasion, we’re gonna play something we haven’t played in about nine years right here.”
It might have been nearly a decade since this song last saw the stage with Simpson, but he and his band (bassist Kevin Black, keyboardist Robbie Crowell, guitarist Laur Joamets, and drummer Miles Miller) have never sounded tighter playing this heater.
Simpson followed that up with another hit off his 2013 debut album High Mountain, “Life Ain’t Fair And The World Is Mean.” The remainder of the three-and-a-half-hour set was filled with hits like “It Ain’t All Flowers,” “I Don’t Mind,” Sing Along,” and “Long White Line.”
Of course, since this tour continues the celebration of his Johnny Blue Skies record, Passage Du Desir, the setlist also featured a few songs from that album. I am very envious of anyone at this show. It looked like one helluva way to spend a Monday evening.
