Never mess with a Florida woman.
For years (maybe even centuries?), the Florida Man has been wreaking havoc, doing crazy things, and generating absurd headlines. To be clear, it’s not just one man that is known as the Florida Man. It’s instead more of an idea, or a culture if you will, that select, deranged Floridians possess.
And occasionally, the “Florida Woman” gets in on the fun as well.
In case you aren’t following, allow me to direct you to some examples that we’ve covered here at Whiskey Riff of “Sunshine State” residents doing things that only seem to happen in the state that’s become known as America’s appendage:

Obviously, a couple of those above stories have some bad-apples involved. To be clear, this Florida woman that we’re focusing in on with this story is a full fledged hero, and deserves to be hailed as such. A woman named Kim Spencer put her life on the line after her dog, Kona, was attacked by an alligator near her Tampa home.
Kim told FOX13 she was walking her dog near a body of water close to her house when she saw the alligator and tried to get her dog, Kona, to leave it alone:
“I saw the eyes. I saw it turning itself around towards us, and I started pulling Kona away, saying, ‘Let’s go.’ But she’s a really strong dog.”
The dog apparently inched closer to the gator, and when it did, the wild reptile attacked. According to the Florida woman, it all happened fast, and the way she reacted – albeit dangerous – was instinctual:
“She’s facing it, it’s facing her, and it jumped out and got her. She was in up to her (neck); her whole head was inside its mouth. I stopped thinking and just dove on it, jumped on it and straddled it, as lady-like as that is, and was trying to pry its jaws open.
Its back was to me, so it made me just jump on. We just got lucky because just as quickly as it ran after us, it ran back into the water, and we were out of there.”
And I don’t want to jump to conclusions on this story, but I have to think that the Florida woman being absolutely jacked had to have helped free her dog from the jaws of the gator. You’ll see in the video below… she’s ripped.
At the very least, the valiant rescue of the pupper can be attributed to a combination of strength and love for her animal. Kim Spencer wasn’t going to let the gator take her dog without a fight:
“We are empty nesters; she’s my baby, so I wasn’t ready to take on that mindset of an animal versus a human. It could easily happen, and you might not be that lucky to get your child or your pet. Many people say they are more afraid of us than we are of them, clearly not the case.”
Good warning to heed. I don’t know about you, but I have a rule to where I listen to anyone that’s wrestles an alligator and wins.
Now, the Florida woman and her dog Kona are recovering from the scary incident. Both required stitches after the encounter, and ironically enough, Kona is wearing a cone (really wanted to say “Kona is in a cona”) while her stitches heal.
