The southern United States is about to batten down the hatches.
A strong storm system has had meteorologists on their toes the past couple of days, and the worst of it is set to hit states all across the South Friday night into Saturday. It’s a real weekend-ruining storm cell, and one forecast map that’s predicting the instability and rotation of the weather cycle has garnered a lot of attention online.
Is it because the storm looks like it could bring a lot of volatility to the table? Well, sort of. The real reason that this forecast map is attracting a number of eyeballs is actually rather comical. WDAM in Mississippi put out this forecast map below to provide a visual of the potential storm path and the areas of most concern. It obviously wasn’t done intentionally, but the “pink area” shown on the radar is the very definition of phallic.
Take a look:
Looks like this storm is going to aggressively penetrate the Deep South. Stay alert. pic.twitter.com/hEwf1ay4T1

Sheesh… it doesn’t look like you want to be in that path of that instability and rotation when it hits the South hard on Saturday.
In all seriousness, the storm is forecasted to bring damaging winds, potential tennis-ball-sized hail, and it’s even expected to spin up a couple of tornados. So there’s definitely some concern with the danger this line of storms can bring. In all silliness, everyone online is having a field day cracking jokes about the phallic weather map.
And there’s nothing wrong with that. When the time comes, those that need to seek shelter in states like Alabama and Mississippi will do so. But until then, we can all have a laugh at the weather map that has gone viral and garnered hilarious replies like these:
Hope they are ready!!! Because it’s a big one

Nine months from now, expect a few new storms to develop.

And through my research for this story (my old college professors would be so proud), I stumbled upon a wonderful account on X that’s got plenty of growth opportunity. If you liked this story, there’s a good chance you’d be a fan of the reporting that “Weather Peens” does online.
They basically keep an eye out for potential phallic weather patterns appearing on weather maps all across the country. Around this time last year, they excitedly shared an image of 2024’s first “Marginal Megapeen.” That’s real journalism if you ask me:
This is the first marginal megapeen of the year! https://t.co/09NI3DOto4
