The country music legend Randy Travis is getting his own biopic.
Last week, it was announced that Randy Travis is getting a film to honor his life’s work and celebrate the music he is still making. Announced during a performance at the Grand Ole Opry, Clay Walker performed “Forever and Ever, Amen” before inviting Randy Travis back to the stage to announce the forthcoming project.
“We’re gonna be producing the first and most epic Randy Travis biopic. A movie about Randy Travis’ life: it’s called ‘Forever and Ever, Amen.’ The good Lord’s had his hand in this, and we’re gonna make the best movie about this man’s life.”
The Grand Ole Opry crowd erupted with applause at this announcement.
As details emerge about the project, it looks like it will be legendary indeed. Eric Groth, a veteran film producer, and writer-director Andrew Hyatt are teaming with Zach Dasher and Korie Robertson on the project, with Wyatt directing from his script.
Engine Casting has already selected some of the cast, which will feature Travis’ friend Clay Walker. Clay Walker will take one of the lead roles, portraying the “Three Wooden Crosses” singer during the 40s and 50s. Clay Walker will also serve as an executive producer alongside Travis and Randy Travis’ wife, Mary Travis.
“I’m so glad that this story is going to get told because it deserves to get told.”
Walker told People Magazine in an exclusive interview.
While casting directors have yet to choose an actor or country music colleague to portray Randy Travis in his younger years, Randy’s wife, Mary, is thrilled that they have locked down Clay Walker to star as him for a portion of his life.
“This is what we prayed for – for somebody who would tell Randy’s life story just as he lived it.”
Of course, the biopic will tell the incredible story of how Randy Travis became one of the most loved voices in country music and continues to be at the forefront of country stars even after his 2013 stroke that led to his aphasia.
However, Clay Walker also noted that his biopic will focus on many other aspects of Randy Travis’s life beyond his music and will shed new light on who he is.
“(Moviegoers) are going to find out the deep struggles that he had. I look at Randy’s life, and I see redemption. This is a man who’s overcome all those challenges. He’s survived it all. Everybody knows that golden voice of his, but I think this movie is going to endear him to people in a whole new way.”
While Walker laid down a stellar version of “Forever and Ever, Amen” at the Grand Ole Opry for the biopic’s announcement, he made it very clear to People Magazine that he would not try to mimic Travis’ vocals during the film. It has been decided that they will use his recordings for the music throughout the biopic.
“This really is about that voice of his. Nobody can come even close to getting that right. I can sing pretty good, but I’m no Randy Travis, that’s for sure.”
Shooting for the biopic is expected to start this summer and will be shot in Nashville and Travis’ home state of North Carolina, along with various other locations as needed. The production company is aiming to have this project hit theaters in 2026.
I can’t wait to hear more about this project as it gets underway. With Clay Walker portraying Travis during one portion of his life, this sounds like it will be a film people talk about for years and years to come.
