Welp… so much for that.
Honestly, I’ll never quite understand the point of episode descriptions being released in advance… once the episode airs, sure. For people who are perhaps looking back for a specific episode, or can’t remember which one they left off at, it can make a lot of sense. But for the average fan who tunes in to see them as they’re released, it just offers up the opportunity for unnecessary and unwanted spoilers to the plot… usually small, unimportant spoilers, but spoilers nonetheless.
That being said… SPOILER ALERT… we’re getting into a little bit of Yellowstone prequel series 1923, and specifically, Season 2. We’re not exactly talking about a major series spoiler, and many fans already saw this one coming, but if you don’t want to know, then just scroll on through.
If you saw 1923 Season 1 on Paramount+, you already know that Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar), the handsome and adventurous son of James Dutton (Tim McGraw’s character in the first Yellowstone prequel series 1883), has spent his time hunting in Africa following his service to the United States military in World War I. Always drinking, he essentially needs to find ways to make his life exciting (and simultaneously escape reality) following the war, and is hired in Kenya to hunt leopards that are attacking people at this fancy safari place. He meets Alexandra, they fall in love, yada yada, but the big part of Spencer’s story as it relates to the overall Dutton family is that… he’s not there. They’re in Montana trying to fend off these attacks from Banner Creighton (Jerome Flynn) and Donald Whitfield (Timothy Dalton), and Spencer is overseas. Granted, he spend half the first season trying to get back home, and then is separated form his new wife, Alexandra, at the end of the season.
Now, Season 2 is set to premiere on February 23 on Paramount+, and the big thing that everybody is hoping for, and it’s been well-documented among fans of the show, is that they want Spencer to get back to Montana quickly, and join the rest of his family for the bulk of Season 2. Fans do NOT want Spencer to spend all of Season 2 still trying to get back to Montana on what is essentially a side plot.
And according to the new episode descriptions… that’s exactly what is going to happen. In fact, it looks like Spencer and Alexandra will spend the entire season (the FINAL season of 1923) apart and trying to get back to Montana.
Brough to attention by fans on Reddit, this is what the descriptions for the first 7 episodes (there’s expected to be 8 in total) say :
Episode 1: The winter brings new challenges and dangers for the Duttons; Spencer and Alexandra set off on separate journeys.
Episode 2: Things get contentious at the courthouse; Spencer stays in Galveston longer than he desires; Mother Nature makes her presence known.
Episode 3: Alexandra runs into trouble while traveling alone; making enemies along the way, Father Renaud and Marshal Kent close in on Teonna.
Episode 4: Whitfield garners support for his new business venture; Spencer has a run-in with the sheriff in Fort Worth.
Episode 5: The search for Teonna continues; Alexandra and Spencer find their footing on two different trains.
Episode 6: The Duttons receive good news; Alexandra catches a lucky break during her journey; Teonna reunites with a face from her past.
Episode 7: Jacob and his crew eagerly await Spencer’s return at the train station; Teonna has a fateful run-in; Alexandra braves the cold.
C’mon Taylor Sheridan… you’re killing me man. Really?
Fans quickly took to the comments to share their frustration:
“I knew he would do this. People told me he wouldn’t. They said Spencer and Alex would be reunited by episode three.”
“Remember when Brandon was hyping this season up and saying that he had plenty of scenes with Jacob and Cara?!”
“This is … bad. I thought Alexandra and Spencer would be back in Montana by mid-season. Their chemistry together was one of the main things that made Season 1 so entertaining.”
“I don’t understand the creative decision not to have Spencer at the ranch at the beginning. As the last episode makes zero sense.”
“What a sh*t show.”
“Omg not another season of this BS.”
“Ffs dragging this sh*t put a whole season…”
“Those episode descriptions seem like same dragged out crap that they had in season 1. I was hoping for a more 1883 vibe for this season.”
“I just hope Spencer doesn’t spend all of S2 coming home. It’d feel like a rehash of his S1 return home trip.”
I guess we’ll see, but it certainly doesn’t bode well for the expectations of Season 2… we wanted to see Spencer back home with Jacob and Cara (Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren), fighting the good fight alongside his family… not sitting on a boat and a bus and a train for 8 episodes and then showing up in the finale to save the day. And Alexandra will be flying solo is seems… just a massive disappointment from the start.
But… Taylor Sheridan does have a long history of surprising fans, usually pulling off a pretty great story when the odds seem to be against it. A lot of people hated the final season of Yellowstone, but given the circumstances with Kevin Costner, and being forced to wrap it all up in a few episodes without the main character, I’d say it was pretty damn good.
I guess we’ll find out come February 23rd.
