In 2023, Miranda Lambert performed “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys” at Willie Nelson’s 90th birthday celebration.

Willie and Waylon Jennings recorded their #1 hit in 1978, which was originally written and recorded by Ed Bruce, along with his wife Patsy Bruce. The song was featured on his 1976 self-titled album, and Chris LeDoux also covered it for his 1976 album, Songbook of the American West.

Of course, it was made extremely popular by Waylon and Willie, when they covered it for their 1978 duets album Waylon & Willie. It became an instant classic, peaking at #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs chart later that same year, in addition to reaching the #42 spot on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. The pair won a Grammy award for the duet in 1979 for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.

This week, Miranda spoke with John Spong at Texas Monthly for his One by Willie podcast, where she explained why it’s so special to her:

“Man, what a story that is. I feel like it is one of those songs that I hear it differently every time I hear it—still, to me. It’s just, it’s such a message. And I actually sang it this weekend at Whitewater Amphitheater, where we were playing, and I did it with Calder Allen and Wade Bowen.

And just seeing the crowd and what that song—like, the way that song hits people, seeing the crowd just sway their arms and sing it so loud. Because cowboys have this reputation, because they don’t stick around long… but it’s the allure of that bad boy that we all want, and I feel like this song said it perfectly.”

I mean, she’s not wrong… I don’t think I could have said it any better.

She joked that it makes her want to be a cowboy in her her “next life”:

“It’s so good. It makes me want to be a cowboy, real bad. In my next life.”

Miranda also added that Willie’s timeless classics are woven into her most important life moments, calling them “little stamps” and noting just how much she loves “Last Thing I Needed First Thing…”

“They are part of our lives. And they’re like little stamps. One of my other favorite songs is ‘Last Thing I Needed, First Thing This Morning.’ I mean, what a song. But there’s so many. I mean, you have a whole podcast digging into it because it’s that much. You know what I mean?”

I couldn’t agree with her more, and now that I’m actually thinking about it, she would do an incredible job with “Last Thing” if she ever wanted to cover it… it’s one of my all-time favorites, and I love her, so I’m biased, but still… it would be so good.

Willie is an icon and a legend, to put it mildly, and he’s clearly influenced artists across so many different genres of music through his heartfelt storytelling and uniquely Texas perspective.

Here’s the audio from Miranda’s performance at The Hollywood Bowl:
