Loving fishing to a fault?

I’m all for ripping lips, but most fishermen usually check in with the weather before they go out on the water. Apparently Brian Johnson, his dog Sam and his friend Tony weren’t aware that a tornado would hit near Port Arthur, Texas. So they put their bass boat into the water and went out to wet a few lines.

Pretty early into their fishing trip, a sharp-eyed Tony started looking at the weather that was forming on the horizon. Once he got a notification on his cellular device, his suspicions about the tornado were confirmed, as you can hear the guy in a “I Can Fix It” shirt say in the video:

“I think we’ve got a tornado over there. See that funny color? I’m pretty sure that’s what that is because I just got a warning on my phone. I’m almost positive that’s what that is.”

Strangely enough, Brian Johnson – the captain of S.S. Minnow – wasn’t fazed by the ominous clouds in the sky. He kept scooting around in his boat, and at one point appeared to stop by a dock to pick up some more fishing poles. When Tony got back into the vessel, he seemingly tried to warn Johnson one more time before they embarked on their journey:

“I don’t like that blue right there. But if you are going down, I’m going down with you brother.”

Famous last words.

The two men (and the poor dog that was with them) started motoring back out onto the water, and that’s when the weather really got ugly. Rain gear and ponchos were slowly put on, and right before they actually get engulfed by the storm, they got dangerously close to losing all of their reels. As the boat rocked violently, a gust of wind came through and just about took all of the reels with it.

Johnson tried to turn into the direction of the storm to try and expedite the process, but the weather was just too much to over come. Whether it was intentional or unintentional, Johnson steered the fishing boat to shallow water, and that’s when the 160 mile per hour storm seemingly intensified and flipped their boat. Luckily, they were only a few feet away from the shore at this point, and they somehow all escaped with minor injuries.

That’s one of the wilder videos you’ll ever see.

I don’t know if saying “surviving a tornado by the Grace of God” is accurate when the Good Lord above has graced us all with the ability to use a weather app to check forecasts ahead of time. Sure, tornados can sometimes pop up out of nowhere, but typically meteorologists area able to monitor conditions and predict if strong storms – or even tornados – would be possible on any given day.

Seems to me like these guys had a decent heads up about the storms and just decided to go out fishing anyways. I wouldn’t categorize that as the smartest decision that man had ever made, and those on social media definitely agreed:

“Was it just me, or did I notice they didn’t have a life jacket on? The heck with the rain slicker!”

“Dumbest thing I’ve seen in a long time.”

“Looked like there was plenty of time to get out of its path. Don’t let the insurance company see this video.”

“The DOG knew what was going on for sure.”

“There’s a tornado coming. Let me get my slicker.”

“To even stay out when the blue was coming like that was just plain dumb.”

If you didn’t feel like watching the full seven minute long video, you can catch the sped up version that’s gotten a lot of attention online:
