There’s no question that Taylor Sheridan is the busiest man in Hollywood right now, cranking out show after show, movie after movie… when does the man sleep? And while most of his shows are pretty good, some speculate that he’s spread himself too thin, and the quality has suffered. Is it fair? Hard to say… but it’s definitely a popular assumption.
His latest, Landman, premiered last night, and has garnered some mixed reviews. Starring Billy Bob Thornton, Demi Moore, Jon Hamm and more, the show is described as:
“Set in the proverbial boomtowns of West Texas, LANDMAN is a modern-day tale of fortune-seeking in the world of oil rigs.
Based on the notable 11-part podcast “Boomtown” from Imperative Entertainment and Texas Monthly, the series is an upstairs/downstairs story of roughnecks and wildcat billionaires fueling a boom so big, it’s reshaping our climate, our economy and our geopolitics.”
The trailer actually looked pretty awesome, and the soundtrack is actually pretty killer. More on that coming soon, but much like Yellowstone, we have some great country and red dirt music on there from bands like Whiskey Myers, Brent Cobb, Treaty Oak Revival, 49 Winchester, Tanner Usrey, Turnpike Troubadours and more.
Of course, we’ve only seen two episodes so far, and there is plenty more to come, but right out of the gate, fans were a little disturbed by one scene in particular.
Thornton’s character, Tommy Norris, has a fairly graphic conversation with his 17 year old daughter Ainsley, played by Michelle Randolph, who happily tells her own father how she loves having sex with her boyfriend and all the graphic ways they avoid getting pregnant. As the father of a young girl, I found it pretty mortifying, but also just flat out unrealistic and cringey. I mean, what teenager talks like that with her father?
Taylor Sheridan is a lunatic ⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️ https://t.co/59ACmhkyqy

See what I mean? My God, she’s a child…
Needless to say, there was PLENTY of commentary about this particular scene and most of it wasn’t pretty.
If my daughter ever said anything like that to me. I'd be sick #landman

Something is definitely wrong with the new show Landman. His daughter is 17 years old, and the show has grown men looking her down, jumping in the shower with her, her jumping up and down with her bottom out trying to grab something on the top shelf while an old man watched her.… pic.twitter.com/Di6oxvASsi

I think it's a rare miss for Sheridan.
Crass AND boring.— Lance 'Doc' Pearson 🅙 (@DocLanceP) November 18, 2024
Between Beth and John and now this, I think it’s safe to assume Taylor has some weird obsession between father daughter sex talks.

Trying too effing hard, Sheridan.
Families watch his shows together on Sundays. Imagine all the young women in the room with their daughters and then seeing this.

No daughter in West Texas is saying that to their Dad. They are way off on that.

I’m convinced somebody needs to check his computer hard drive. Too much of his new stuff revolves around stuff like this. It’s just weird

It was a good first episode. That scene was weird. No daughter in Texas talks to her dad like that.

What is with this man and his characters father/daughter relationships?

Couldn’t believe this scene lol

I had damn near the exact same reaction watching that scene.
A shocked, wtf, look…

In addition to Oscar-winner Billy Bob Thornton, as well as Jon Hamm, and Demi Moore, Landman stars Ali Larter, 1923’s Michelle Randolph, Jacob Lofland, Kayla Wallace, Taylor Sheridan mainstay James Jordan, Mark Collie, and Paulina Chávez. Andy Garcia and Michael Peña will also feature in guest roles.
Thornton plays Tommy Norris, a crisis manager for an oil company, while the always incredible Jon Hamm takes on the role of Monty Miller, a powerful Texas oil industry vet who goes way back, both personally and professionally, with Tommy Norris. Demi Moore stars as Cami, the wife of another powerful oil baron in Texas and a friend of Norris.
The first two episodes premiered last night, with the remaining 8 set to air every Sunday on Paramount Network.
