We need a full version.
Recently, it feels as though many artists are venturing outside of their genre for some covers. While covering other artists is traditional at a country concert, those covers are often of legends like Merle Haggard, Lynyrd Skynyrd, George Strait, or Randy Travis. We rarely see country artists venture into the pop genre to pull out a cover, but I am so here for it.
In the early fall, Silverada covered Chappell Roan’s “Good Luck, Babe,” putting a country twist on the original synth-filled song, and it ripped. Josiah & The Bonnevilles version of the same song is phenomenal.
But Colby Acuff is now putting his country spin on a pop song, but he’s not leaning into the modern-day artists; he’s going back to the 2000s and covering a legend.
Amy Winehouse.
I don’t care what kind of music you tend to listen to; I think we can all collectively agree that Amy Winehouse was an unbridled talent, and her story is tragic. The British singer and songwriter is known for her spanning vocal range and her blues-inspired sound, which fans across the pop genre latched onto. The soulfulness in her voice has yet to be recreated by another artist, and she is a talent that left this earth far too soon.
In 2007, Winehouse teamed up with the legendary producer Mark Ronson, and the two created her hit song “Valerie.” While their version was a success, the lyrics to the easily recognizable track were already written as Dave McCabe initially recorded it for his band The Zutons, an English-based act. While their version is also stellar, Amy Winehouse’s take on the song became an international hit, putting it on the map everywhere. It is now considered one of her signature tracks.
Colby Acuff recently shared a clip of his take on the song, and I am hooked.
“Broke out a little Amy Winehouse the other night.”
He adds a bit of twang to the song’s sound but keeps all the good stuff that maintains its integrity. What I found so captivating about this cover is how Acuff takes the hard-to-reach notes and puts a little grit on them to fit his range better, and it works so well. The lyrics sound a little more desperate with this, and in my opinion, it drives home the words a little harder.
“Since I’ve come on home
Well, my body’s been a mess
And I’ve missed your ginger hair
And the way you like to dress
Won’t you come on over?
Stop makin’ a fool out of me…”
Acuff sang the heck out of this song, which is a testament to his talent because covering this song is not a walk in the park. I cannot stop listening to this snippet and need more from Acuff.
Check it out.
