Revisiting one of their older hits.

Shane Smith & the Saints surprised fans today when they announced they revisited one of their fans’ favorite tracks off their 2015 record, Geronimo. The Austin, Texas-based band is tipping their cap to their beloved home state by re-releasing “Bury Me In Texas.”

“NEW SONG DROP!!

Here’s a brand new version of an old fan favorite! ‘Lord Bury Me In Texas’ has always hit close to home for us… literally. This song was recorded in our early days as a band, and we’ve always wanted an opportunity to run it back now that we have a few more years under our belts.”

If there is one thing Texans are proud of, it’s where they come from, and any Texan would tell you it’s the greatest state in the nation. Unlike Ray Wylie Hubbard, who sings “Screw You, We’re From Texas,” which is a very in-your-face Texas anthem, Shane Smith & the Saints chose to come at writing a song about their home from a more poetic stance.

Last year, during the Cosmic Rodeo Live from Luckenbach, Texas, frontman Shane Smith told the audience about the inspiration for this song.

“We wanted to write a song about being proud of where we’re from. We wanted to try and do it in a tasteful way, so we ended up writing it about where you want to be buried if that’s tasteful at all.”

The re-release of this single maintains the integrity of the original cut; however, given that Shane Smith and the Saints have refined their sound over the nine years since this first dropped, the production of this rendition feels much more full-body. The song’s sound quality appears higher, and the melody feels complete from the jump, whereas the original version is more stripped-back. Smith’s vocals have a little grit on them, which (in my opinion) rounds out the track perfectly.

“Yeah, I went out to take some time and see what I could find
My brothers they’re wild as the tree is tall
I tell ’em I’ll be back by the early fall
We’ll be stompin’ to a beat at the ol’ Gruene Hall
Singin’, “Lord, bury me in Texas,” yeah…”

This re-release is the perfect way to revisit a song. It’s aged like fine wine, and Shane Smith & the Saints proved it to be a timeless tune through this reimagination. Alongside this surprise release, Shane Smith & the Saints also announced that they will be headlining Billy Bob’s for the first time in five years.

“We’re also excited to announce (after nearly 5 years) we’re making our return to Billy Bob’s Texas on April 4th, 2025.”

There is no better way to celebrate loving the state you’re from than releasing “Lord Bury Me In Texas” and announcing a show at one of Texas’ most historic venues.

Fire it up.
