Does anyone else have a countdown to The Boys From Oklahoma shows?
No? Okay, maybe it’s just me, but as an Oklahoma State alum, you can’t fault me for being over the moon that Cross Canadian Ragweed is reuniting with support from the Turnpike Troubadours in Stillwater’s very own Boone Pickens Stadium.
While the anticipation builds for the four-night event in Stillwater among fans, the “Boys From Oklahoma” are knocking off the dust as they prepare for their first show together in over a decade. And despite being so long since they have graced a stage together, frontman Cody Canada said they all agreed it was time to get back out there.
“You guys are persistent… a couple of things, yes, it is the full lineup. Grady, Randy, Jeremy, myself. Yes, it is gonna be a good time. Yes, we are all in good graces. We are all getting older in this life, not one of us isn’t. And it was time to do it.
Our kids need to see it, and our parents need to see it, the ones that are still here with us, and it’s gonna be a good time. Stillwater needs it, the world needs it, America needs it, Jesus, we all need it. Let’s just do it, it’s gonna be fun, right? The last few days I’ve been thinking about what I’m gonna say about all this and I think I just got it all out there.
I will say this, when it comes to the show, this is the biggest thing that we have ever done. The biggest thing that Shannon’s ever had to promote, the biggest thing I’ve ever had to talk about. Jason Boland & The Stragglers, The Great Divide, Stoney LaRue, Turnpike Troubadours and Ragweed. That feels really good to say that.”
After building a career as a cornerstone of the Red Dirt movement, Ragweed hung it up in 2010. With their sound inspiring so many other Texas country and Red Dirt artists, one can only assume they want to make sure they sound as good in April as they did back in the late 90s, if not better. With rehearsals in full swing, Cross Canadian Ragweed stopped by 95.9 The Ranch to chat about the upcoming shows and how they feel about it.
While they are still many months away from the event, Cody Canada said they feel like they picked up where they left off.
“We did the set front to back, and we whooped its ass last night. It feels great.”
One of the radio hosts then asked the band how long it took for the lyrics, melodies, and other portions of the songs to come back to them while they were rehearsing.
“We really…on the first song, right out of the gate. We just dove right in. We all saw each other a few weeks ago, so we got all of that out.”
I am very interested to see what the setlist entails, but I am also thrilled to hear that during these early rehearsals, they are feeling good and have their groove back. Whenever you take that long of a break as a band, there is always the uncertainty of whether that “magic” will still be there, but it appears things are business as usual between the boys of Cross Canadian Ragweed.
