If you have yet to hear his name, Joshua Quimby needs to be on your radar.

Born in Rhode Island, raised in Connecticut, and now residing in Nashville, Quimby carries a deep, raspy twang that immediately sets his sound apart from others on the music scene. Combine his rich vocals with a captivating knack for introspective songwriting, and you have yourself a diamond in the rough.

I first discovered Quimby when I stumbled upon a video of him covering Colter Wall’s “Devil Wears A Suite And Tie.” His vocal strength immediately blew me away. He pulls the notes from deep in his belly, and the acoustics of the song mimic the original recording, with a little flare making it his own at the start of the track.

His vocals remind me of Wall’s but with a little more of a “growl.”

After hearing his cover, I went on a deep dive into his discography which features his 2022 self-titled debut album, and the more recently released 2024 project, Back Home. He also has recorded a stellar OurVinyl Session in addition to another EP, These Old Jeans.

In just a few short years, Joshua Quimby is quickly capturing the hearts of listeners with his thoughtful lyricism, folk/American guitar-picking style, and booming voice. With inspiration drawn from John Prine and Hank Williams Sr., you can hear the rustic yet true stories he mimics from these artists.

Quimby’s Instagram bio describes him quickly and accurately:

“Northeastern songsmith & six-string picker. Folk, Country, & the Blues.”

The best way to acquaint yourself with an artist is to pop in earbuds and let the music flood your mind. So instead of taking a shot in the dark about what song to start with, I am here to lay it out in a foolproof way.

Relax, and enjoy a handful of picks from country music newcomer, and perhaps one of the best acts coming out of the northeast, Joshua Quimby.
