Snow day ruined.
It’s strangely good to know that me and the moose in this video have something in common: snow makes our serotonin levels go through the roof. While snow and winter weather is sometimes viewed as a negative, nothing gets my spirits up more than seeing some white, powdery accumulation scattered across the ground.
I unfortunately don’t live in an area that gets a lot of snow. It’s a bummer, and I’m not getting my hopes up about it anytime soon. I’m still wearing short sleeves and shorts and it’s November. Need that colder weather to get here like I need my next parlay to hit (badly).
But anyways, enough about me and more about this young moose in Steamboat Springs, Colorado that’s going viral. A Ring security camera set up to keep an eye on the house ended up focusing in on a playful moose that was making the most out of the winter wonderland that had fallen in Steamboat Springs.
Why is this awesome? Well, considering that this moose doesn’t appear to be that old, this could be one of the very first times that it’s interacted with snow. The young animal was exuding child-like excitement as it frolicked along in the fresh coat of white precipitation that had fallen onto the ground.
The older, adult moose population in Colorado is likely very accustomed to snow fall. Like a lot of us boring adults, they probably just see it and go on with their lives. We could all really learn a lesson from this young moose that’s making the most of the moment, and soaking in the gift that is winter weather.
Speaking of the moose population in Colorado, if you had to guess which state out of the lower 48 (Alaska has the most) hosts the biggest moose population, what would you go with? I feel like if I was guessing, I would have said Colorado or Montana… and I would have been wrong.
The state that can boast about being the most moose populous is actually Maine. It’s estimated that around 60,000 to 70,000 moose reside in the state of Maine, with other states Idaho, Michigan, and Minnesota also having large populations. The more north a state is, the more likely they are to have moose (for reference, Canada has almost one million).
Getting back to the winter-loving moose though, it was having a blast playing in the snow. That is until it squared off against its worst enemy: its reflection. With everything covered in white snow, it probably messed with the moose’s vision (which isn’t all that great to begin with). So when it saw its own reflection in the window of the home, it went running back to its moose mama.
With the Steamboat Springs area forecasting snow through the beginning of the week, the post was shared with the caption:
“How are you enjoying the snow this morning? This young moose is with mom and a sibling in the Fish Creek Falls Road area. It was doing fine until it saw its reflection in the window.”
