Fresh off a 24-14 loss at Cincinnati in which his kicker Ian Hershey missed two field goals, Arizona State head football coach Kenny Dillingham was immediately eager to upgrade.
Dillingham let out a “dead serious” proclamation to anyone who’d hear it on campus back in Tempe. Open kicking tryouts would be held Monday, and any Arizona State student with the skills to match should attend.
Kenny Dillingham said that ASU will be hosting kicking tryouts on Monday:
"Our kicking game is atrocious. If you can kick and you're at Arizona State, email me. We're going to have kicking tryouts on Monday … I'm dead serious."@DevilsDigest pic.twitter.com/tUsrZDP4Wi

It took almost no time at all for a Sun Devils junior named Nolan Krinsky to answer the bell in dramatic, epic fashion. Krinsky’s stated goal in his X/Twitter biography is to walk on to the football team. He also notes that he’s a former K/P (as in kicker and punter) at Wakeland High School in Frisco, Texas.
A couple or so years away from competitive football has done nothing to diminish Krinsky’s leg. Young men’s got a cannon, evident in this successful boot through the uprights from midfield:
I would love to tryout for the @ASUFootball team. I am a kicker, punter, place holder and have been trying to walk onto the team for three years now and I love kicking and putting in the work. @KennyDillingham if you give me a tryout I promise I won’t disappoint @RisingSunDevils… pic.twitter.com/cl0j4qVfbN

I am a current junior at ASU as well. If you look through my page you will see how dedicated I am to my craft and trying to walk on. I have been to every home game and even some of the open practices. I would really love to contribute to this team.

It’s not like Krinsky took a massive running start as if this were a kickoff scenario. That was a traditional field goal stride. He drilled it right down the middle from 60 yards out. Add 10 yards to where the 50-yard line is because of where the goalposts are set. How impressive is that?
Even before Dillingham’s rather hilarious and shocking spur of the moment announcement, Krinsky has had his eye on being a Sun Devils kicker for a while. His freaking pinned tweet is from last March, where he was grateful just to come out to practice in a totally unofficial capacity.
Getting closer and closer too achieving my dream of walking on at @ASUFootball. Thank you @CoachCoop84 for the unofficial invite to watch practice. Loved seeing the competitive atmosphere. Extremely blessed for this opportunity. #AGTG #ForksUp pic.twitter.com/qG8Ily7SDM

This isn’t your standard Pat McAfee-led College GameDay routine of picking someone from the crowd and having them kick field goals for massive amounts of money. This is Nolan Krinsky shooting video and creating content for the job he wants. Nobody was paying much attention to his journey at all before today. It’s the long shot of all long shots, or a Hail Mary if you like a football analogy.
Willingham appears to have answered Krinsky’s Hail Mary efforts, or at least given the ball a chance while it’s hanging in the air. We’ll see if Krinsky can figuratively catch his opportunity of a lifetime. At the very least, there’s no way he doesn’t get an invite off that one kick alone.
Stay on that grind, Nolan. I think your time is coming soon.
Punt work from tonight.
