Its’ definitely… different.
Today, Lainey Wilson released a music video for her song “Phone, Keys, Wallet,” which features special guest in a name you probably know, John Mayer, on guitar. She released the song in June, and it marks the first time they’ve collaborated on a song, though Lainey has been a guest on his SiriusXM radio show too.
Written by Lainey with Kid Harpoon, Jon Decious, Dan Pellarin, Dallas Wilson, Trannie Anderson and Summer Overstreet, it finds her rushing around, trying to get out of the house, and when everything gets too overwhelming, she remembers that all she needs are Jesus, Jones, her mom, phone, wallet, keys and her lover, which I’m assuming was implied to be her now-husband, Duck, whom she just married earlier this year in May:
“When I’m 10 minutes late
Rushing like a hurricane through the house
Might leave the iron plugged in
But I got the surefires ironed out
Can’t fit ’em all in my pocket
But I got a little list of go-tos
And that’s Jesus, Jones, Mama
My phone, keys, wallet, and you”
Lainey says she feels like a “tornado with boots on” through a lot of her busy life and career, and this song is about finding someone who can live in that chaos with you:
“I feel like a tornado with boots on half the time, and this song is really about finding somebody who’s okay with that chaos and chooses to love you through it anyway.”
The song is cute, but it’s the music video that really has her fans talking… because it features Lainey, without her head, as she tries to leave the house and make sure she has everything she needs with her.
They took the line that says “I’d lose my head if it wasn’t attached, got a couple screws loose” very literally, as we see Lainey eventually chasing her head as it rolls through a field down into a pond. It’s honestly pretty unsettling to watch, but I have to give her major points for creativity. To have been a fly on the wall when they were coming up with this concept…
Fans of course had a lot to say about it, and I think it’s safe to say I’ve never seen another music video like this:

It’s definitely something, and I can tell a ton of effort and thought went into this, and Lainey is always so funny that I’m sure she had a grand old time putting this together and filming it. They really took the concept of the song to the next level, and even though it’s a really weird video, let’s be honest, I think they captured the essence of the song and definitely drove the point all the way home.
I have to imagine there’s a reason they waited for fall to release this… it’s very much giving Halloween, but you really have to just watch it for yourself to get the full effect.
