I guess Democrats didn’t watch football until Tim Walz came along?
The governor of Minnesota, and Democratic vice presidential nominee, has spent a lot of time on the campaign trail talking about his time as a football coach. Walz served as the defensive coordinator for Mankato West High School in Minnesota from 1996 to 2006, when he decided to run for Congress. And during the Democratic National Convention, several former members of his football teams took the stage to throw their support behind “Coach Walz.”
And during a campaign event today in Wausau, Wisconsin, Kamala Harris’ running mate again referred to his time as an assistant coach with a…bizarre claim.
Walz was talking about Democrats reclaiming the American flag and family values from Donald Trump and Republicans when he proudly claimed that he personally did the same thing for football:
“I will claim this. I did this on personal thing. I took football back from ’em.”
Umm, what?
Pretty sure it was Republicans who were calling for boycotts of the NFL over their “social justice” initiatives and players kneeling during the national anthem. And one of the most famous football players in the world, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, is dating Taylor Swift, who endorsed Joe Biden in 2020 and just endorsed Kamala Harris too.
Yeah, I don’t think anybody’s ever accused the league of being “too Republican.”
Now, are there more Republican football fans than Democrat? I mean, maybe? But even then, I’m gonna go out on a limb and say it varies way more by team and location than anything. And I’m also going to guess that Democrats who aren’t football fans aren’t going to all of a sudden start watching because Walz was an assistant high school football coach 20 years ago.
So how, exactly, did Tim Walz reclaim football for Democrats?
Well, maybe we’ll find that out in the VP debate against JD Vance when the two meet up.
