Those poor souls who love Michigan football and saw their FCS-caliber quarterback Davis Warren get walloped by Texas in his own stadium could’ve just gone to Dallas Cosm to save themselves some pain.
Oscar-winning actor and Texas minister of culture Matthew McConaughey was the off-field catalyst who, in my eyes, inspired the Longhorns to hit the field and dominate in Ann Arbor. Rocking his alma mater’s flag prior to kickoff, McConaughey stared down former Wolverines Heisman Trophy winner Charles Woodson. No easy task, I don’t care how good an actor you are!

Texas proceeded to go out and vindicate their A-list faculty member’s impassioned endorsement, blitzing Michigan to the tune of a 24-3 lead. And even better, McConaughey was invited onto FOX’s halftime show set to break down the action and the improvement he’s seen from starting quarterback Quinn Ewers.

Michigan alum Derek Jeter was the Wolverines’ honorary captain. It sure looked like the New York Yankees legend didn’t want any of the smoke on the sidelines in his exchanges with McConaughey.

McConaughey’s motto is to just keep livin‘. And that he is, Livin’ the dream. If I were a Hollywood star, one of the very first things I’d do would be to gain sideline access to my favorite football team, guest spot on pregame and halftime TV shows, and all that good stuff. That’s a fair, not too exploitive way to leverage celebrity status, does it not?

All told, the Longhorns came out of Michigan with a 31-12 blowout win. That’s about as good as they could’ve hoped for. But can we talk about McConaughey’s analysis for a second? He highlighted the subtleties of Ewers’ pocket movement and how he navigates pressure better than in past years. Those talking points alone are better than 90% of what you hear on halftime shows in any sport as is.
If a perpetually teased run for political office isn’t in the cards, I could use McConaughey as a designated hitter-style, locked-in mainstay on college football shows whenever Texas is involved in a big game. Think about it. We’re getting the likely end of the Ewers era, straight into Arch Manning at QB in 2025.
