Cody Johnson has entered the chat.
Yesterday, before Cody Johnson’s headlining set at Windy City Smokeout in Chicago, our former president, Donald Trump, was shot during a rally in Pennsylvania. The horrific incident is what everyone has feared our country is moving to as the political landscape continues to become more and more divided and toxic.
During the rally, shots were fired off, and the former president grabbed for his ear before taking cover behind the podium. Supporters behind him quickly ducked down before Trump’s security team rushed onto the stage to lead him to safety. As Secret Service members are covering him, you can see blood coming from his ear, and Trump holds up a fist and screams “fight, fight, fight” as he is being shuffled off the stage.

Johnson, a proud American, took a second during his set at Windy City Smokeout last night to address the crowd about what happened earlier in the day, and his words moved the crowd.
“About 30 minutes before I went on stage, there was an attempted assassination on former president Trump.”
The crowd boos before Johnson gets into the meat and potatoes of his two-minute speech on the matter.
“Here’s what I am going to say about it, and I hope you hear me out. I mean, it’s my microphone; I can say what I want.
The fact that any American citizen wouldn’t think that what they did today would solve a problem in this country is absolutely disgusting. You want to solve a problem in this country? On election day, go in there and vote for who you want. You know why? Because before most of you were born, an American soldier died for you to have the right for you to disagree with somebody else in this country.
I’m tired of the hatred; I’m tired of the division. I’m tired of people talking about Trump and Biden. Let me tell you something: there are people in this crowd that agree with Trump, there are people in this crowd that agree with Biden. Guess what? That is your God-given American right to believe whatever you want. That right was fought with sacrifice. Sacrifice from a dead police officer. Sacrifice from a dead firefighter. A dead soldier that went over and said, ‘You know what? I’m going to fight for something bigger.’ So, I don’t give a damn who you vote for, and I don’t give a damn what’s on the news.
There are only three things I give a damn about tonight, you listening to me. They are red, white, and blue.”
Johnson gets riled up and passionately delivers the last few lines. After his last sentence, the crowd breaks into a “USA” chant, and you can feel his words in the microphone resonating with the audience.
“I’m so sick and tired of the division…”
That is how you fire up a crowd and send a message about uniting our nation instead of further dividing it. Johnson is one helluva performer and one proud American.
