Buddy, the gate was wide open…
Sometimes you have to wonder what an animal is thinking.
Deer aren’t known as one of the most intelligent species, but given they need to avoid all sorts of natural predators, cars, and hunters, you think they’d at least have some semblance of common sense to stay alive. While that may be true for many of them, there’s certainly a few that need to thank their lucky stars they’ve made it to this point.
Admittedly, it’s got to be tough for deer to comprehend all of the weird things humans build all over their homes and it seems fences are really a tough one for deer to understand. We’ve seen some full on sprint into a fence, other get all sorts of tangled up in one, and now another video is getting traction online of a deer trying to go over one instead of through it.
Somehow, it would have ended better if he just ran into it…
The video starts with the deer running in a soccer field while some kids play nearby and what I assume to be a mom gets her phone out and starts filming. As the deer passes her by and get to the fence behind her, it has two options.
One, go through the wide open gate.
Two, try to show off and leap over it.
This deer went with option two and boy was that a mistake. While the takeoff was nice, it didn’t get enough height and clipped its hindlegs on the top, sending it’s backside flying upwards as it soared through the air. Spine first, the deer crashed right into the trunk with a shiver inducing crunch before collapsing to the ground in a heap.
It’s pretty clear that it broke its spine, which caused its hind legs to stop working. Either fish and game would have come to put it out of its misery or some of the local predators like coyotes and black bears would have gotten it.
A tragic end for this whitetail buck, but maybe a good lesson for us all. Don’t show off if you don’t have to. Just use the gate instead of leaping the fence…
Deer Tries To Jump A High Fence & Comes Up Woefully Short
This deer thought she was a high jumping Olympian….
I mean, deer can jump pretty high, just not THAT high. Deer are a funny animal and sometimes, they are their own worst enemy. It’s hard to blame them though, they constantly have to be in defense mode. It’s a hard life being low on the food chain, they even have to compete for food in a lot of areas. Every day is a struggle when you’re just hoping to make it to tomorrow.
We’ve seen them make some questionable choices from jumping off bridges, getting stuck in fences, or just making their way into neighborhoods and homes. These choices are made in the name of survival but that doesn’t always mean their desired result comes to fruition.
This deer made a poor decision out of fear. As people approached the deer panicked to get some distance between itself and the people. It took off on a full tear hoping to make the leap of its life over a high fence on the roadside. The deer makes a mighty fine leap that just isn’t good enough.
Only about two feet short…
The deer strikes the fence about ¾ of the way up and gets cartwheeled as it comes to a dead stop midair. The deer gets catapulted back down to the ground and takes off in the opposite direction. Not this fence, not on this day…

Hunter Finds Two Dead Deer Locked Up Inside A Fence
Talk about a wild sight to stumble upon.
We’ve seen several situations already over the past few months of bucks getting their antler locked with each other… it’s just a common occurrence following the rut. Hell, one guy in California even had to rescue a live buck that was locked up to another buck that had already been ravaged by coyotes, and there wasn’t much left. This typically happens during the rut, when bucks try to assert their dominance to fellow male deer, and they fight it out until one gives up or dies.
Although it can be a brutal part of nature, but this is what bucks have to do in order to win over their mate. But speaking of locked up bucks, here we have yet another wild example of what can happen during these battles.
In the footage, a hunter walks up on two dead bucks who were locked together, and they were tangled up in an old fence. It appears that one of the bucks may have gotten its antlers stuck in the other’s chest cavity.
They explain it all in the caption:
“The Whitetail Rut is a special time of year. I stumbled across these two deer that were stuck in the fence right outside my hunting area.
It’s hard to actually know what happened But it looks like they were fighting and the one buck slammed the other one into the fence and in doing so got itself stuck inside the other deer’s chest cavity.”
Check it out:
The hunter explained the scene further:
“Deer extraction. What a rough way to die.
After further debate, I’m pretty sure the one deer died rather instantly due to the antler being shoved inside while fighting. Resulting in the attacker dying from the sheer weight of the other deer on top of him.
Wild times.”

Two Whitetail Deer Full-On Sprint Into Chain Link Fence
On one hand, nature is absolutely incredible.
On the other, sometimes nature is absolutely incredibly dumb.
For the incredible side, we’ve seen a golden eagle fly off with a fox, two alligators fight on a golf course, and a wildebeest leap over attacking lions.
And for an example of nature being incredibly dumb, let’s take a look at this video.
Unfortunately, there’s not many details on where it was taken, but someone noticed two white tailed deer tearing across a field at what appears to be a local high school, so naturally they took out their phone and started filming.
There was a chance that nothing would happen more than some frolicking, a chance that we’d see them leap clear over the fence at the field’s limits, and of course a chance that we’d see exactly this.
As the deer got close to the chain link fence, instead of pulling up or getting ready to jump, they decided to put their shoulders down and hit it head on like a linebacker filling the gap.
If this was a movie, the deer would have busted straight through and made a run for the forest line, but this was real life, meaning the deer got absolutely rocked.
One bounced off while the other somehow got stuck underneath, forced to wiggle out and take off in the other direction.
Fortunately they both seemed okay so we can laugh it off, because let’s be honest, this is pretty funny…
One second making a run for freedom, the next slamming against a web of twisted metal coils.
The highest of highs, and the lowest of lows… that’s nature in a nutshell.
