If you haven’t gotten around to listening to Luke Combs’ Fathers & Sons, what have you been doing with your life?
The emotional project, which in a way could be categorized as a concept album, allowed for Luke Combs to take a deep dive into fatherhood. Now that the country star is a dad himself, he went all out on “Dad Songs,” exploring both the appreciation of fathers, as well as the wonderful experience of being a dad firsthand.
Simply put, you better make sure you have a box of tissues ready if you plan on listening to it all the way through, if anyone still does that. There’s nothing like putting on a record and digesting it front to back. It’s a lost art, mostly thanks to the music industry’s tendency to push singles out rather than full projects.
But there are still some of us out there (DOZENS OF US!) pressing play on a full-length album, and one of those people is former NFL defensive star JJ Watt. He decided to throw the album on while he got his body right in the iron temple (worked out), and that turned out to have some adverse effects on Watt’s gym session.
Only because Fathers & Sons hit JJ Watt right in the feels, just like it did the rest of us:
“Put on Luke’s new album ‘Fathers & Sons’ during workout today. Not even halfway through the warmup… full blown waterworks.
Wishing my grandpa got to meet (my son) Koa. Trying to savor every moment, thinking about my dad… hits you straight in the heart. Thanks for making me cry Luke Combs.”

Amen, JJ Watt.
Luke Combs had a former menacing football player crying at the club gym. That’s how good of a songwriter Combs is, and that’s how poignant the entirety of his newest album lands with listeners. The “Hurricane” singer has plenty of songs to throw on while at the gym, but Fathers & Sons might not be the right Combs project to get your fired up.
It’s more of a “pour a glass of bourbon and cry while looking through a photo album” vibe, as JJ Watt found out today…
