While it was a massive career milestone for The King, George Strait, in Aggieland over the weekend, it was also a big one for Parker McCollum.
The Conroe, Texas, native performed at THE largest ticketed single concert in the United States on a record-breaking night as the opening act. And to top off that already massive career milestone, McCollum was also celebrating his birthday. I’d say that one would go down in the books as a hard one to top.
McCollum took the packed stadium as a chance to debut some new music off his upcoming record. If you follow McCollum closely on social media, odds are that you have seen him teasing his forthcoming record. He has noted he feels it’s his best collection of songs yet and rivals Limestone Kid for quality of lyrics.
While fans eagerly await further details about when the album is slated to be released, I will take all the teasers I can get. During the show, McCollum decided to let fans taste what was in store, debuting a new one, “Big Fancy House.”
McCollum took to Instagram live a few months back and laid it down for fans tuning in to hear, and it instantly resonated with fans. The lyrics detail the heartbreak of ending a relationship where the two lived together (perhaps a marriage). While the narrator is trying to move on, he is consistently reminded of what once was, and he realizes that he will go mad living in a space that constantly reminds him of the love and memories they once shared.
“I thought you would be the one to kill me
Guess it’s true
I can’t live with the memory
What do I do?
I thought I could live without you
And I lied
Now this big ol’ empty house
Is eating me alive.”
The chorus is beyond catch as McCollum slides his vocals into a near falsetto range, driving home the narrator’s lonely cries, finding himself alone and heartbroken.
Talk about a sad country song that left me fired up to hear what else is in store for the Gold Chain Cowboy’s 5th studio album. After the song, the already packed stadium was hooting and hollering. McCollum left some heat on that stage before The King burned it down.
How would you feel about dropping this as your next single, Parker? I mean, 110,905 people heard it Saturday night.
