I can’t say I saw this cover coming, but it actually makes perfect sense.

One of the latest torchbearers in Kentucky’s longstanding country music tradition, up and coming artists and spectacular songwriter Hunter Flynn is a name that needs to be on everyone’s radar right now. His original music is fantastic, but a cover he recently posted to social media and YouTube may be as good of an introduction to his talent as any.

Tipping the proverbial cap to alt-rock powerhouse and fellow Kentuckians Cage the Elephant, who formed in Bowling Green, KY in the mid-2000s, Flynn’s cover of “Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked” is a must listen. Originally written by Cage the Elephant frontman Matt Schultz and released in 2008 as the third single off of their debut self-titled record Cage the Elephant, “Ain’t No Rest For the Wicked” has been a mega hit for the band and has since amassed nearly 700 million streams on Spotify alone.

With Dagan Robison contributing on the acoustic guitar, and his brother Fisher behind the camera, Flynn’s stripped back version of the alt-rock classic showcases just how impressive his vocals are. And now that its out there, he may need to go ahead and release this one to streaming platforms. It’s that good.

And here’s the original for reference as well.

While this cover is pretty killer, Flynn’s original work is hard to beat.

The former insurance salesman quit his day job at the end of 2021 to embark on a career that catered to his creative sensibilities, commissioning drawings to get by as he began putting the pieces in place to get his music career in motion and testing the waters with live gigs. It wasn’t until the summer of 2022 that Flynn ultimately dropped his debut single “You Deserve It All – (Live Session At The Makers Mill),” sharing with the world his soulful vocals and uncanny knack for honest storytelling and authentic lyricism.

Keeping the momentum going, Flynn has consistently added to his growing catalog over the past two years with a handful of singles and his debut EP Appalachian Soul in May of 2023. While he already boasts a strong regional following, Flynn’s fanbase is growing daily, and as more people discover his music, he is sure to break out any time now, just like countless Kentucky artists have done before him. Hunter Flynn is not an artist you are going to want to miss, so you may as well get on the bandwagon here early.

Here are a few of my favorites of his to get you started.
