Never thought about putting my hands in the air in solidarity with the artist on stage like this until Blake Shelton gave his take.
And I must admit… he’s making a lot of sense.
Over the weekend, while performing in Portland, Oregon, Shelton got on his soapbox and preached how much he hates seeing artists ask their crowd to participate in the hand waving activity. His hilarious reasoning not only makes for some lighthearted viewing but also will leave you with a few giggles. He opens his rant mimicking how singers ask their crowd to partake when on stage before getting into the meat and potatoes of his hatred.
“Nobody wants to do that ****, man. Nobody in here wants to stand here tonight and go…like we are having a countdown or something. Waving for the Uber, ‘I’m right here.’ Slappin’ the dude next to you.
Perverts are the only people that like that part of the show…because that’s a boob grab right there.”
He then deserves an Oscar for acting out how he thinks that would play out in a crowd.
“Ope, just doing what Blake said.”
He pokes fun at those in the crowd who want to brush up against something while waving their hands back and forth.
“Don’t do that. Anyway…I just feel like if you all want to sing along with me, we can do that anyway. Just do it naturally. That’s what it’s for. And if y’all happen to want to sing along with me, I can teach you some words…”
While I will not lie that during a slow song, when the flashlights go up in the air, I don’t mind a little hand in the air swaying, but I agree that sometimes it can make or break a concert experience. If you are stuck next to a very enthusiastic hand waver, your space is cramped, or the video you are trying to capture of your favorite song suddenly comes with an obstructed view warning.
But to play devil’s advocate… standing next to a fan that doesn’t know the words (and sings like they do) or obnoxiously belts out the lyrics can also make or break a concert as well… it’s two-fold here, folks.
Regardless, the clip is wildly entertaining. Ladies (I’m sorry), you might be on more alert the next show you attend.
