Another Year, Another Absolutely Chaotic Scene Of Fans Flooding The WM Phoenix Open To Get To The Iconic 16th Hole

The Waste Management Phoenix Open is one of the most lively, entertaining stops on the PGA Tour. Amid the uncertain modern landscape of professional golf, you can always bank on TPC Scottsdale for delivering a good time for players and viewers alike.

Despite some early inclement weather that has delayed tournament play, the ever-gleeful spectators at the site were ready to freaking roll on Friday once the gates were officially opened. The best hole on the course is by far the par-3 16th, with grandstands flanking the greens and a raucous crowd you could easily mistake for an SEC football audience.

Check out the swarm of folks from the sold-out affair who were jockeying for position to get a spot in the bleachers at the 16th hole:

Outside of major championships and THE PLAYERS, there aren’t many more combinations of iconic venue, excellent field of golfers and pure scenery better than the Phoenix Open.

To give the faintest idea of how lit it gets around the 16th green, check out Camilo Villegas holing a lengthy birdie putt during second-round action today:

The fans will literally boo players if they miss the green in regulation, and break out into rapturous applause if their tee shot finds the putting surface. Other than maybe the island 17th green at TPC Sawgrass or the 12th hole at Augusta National, there aren’t many other holes you’d want to have a hole-in-one on if you could choose.

…Which is why it never ceases to amaze me that once upon a time, none other than Tiger Woods damn near created an earthquake with an ace for the ages:

Electric doesn’t even begin to describe this. RAISING THE ROOF, too!? Get out of here. What makes it cooler and defensible is that, first of all, it’s Tiger Woods. Secondly, it can be interpreted as Tiger imploring the fine people watching him to pump up the volume even more. As if that were possible.

Even if golf isn’t typically your thing, trust that you’ll want to tune in throughout the weekend, if only to witness the absurd, heavily inebriated scene at the 16th hole. When the literal weather heat is on and the afternoons go longer, the gallery gets even more restless, feistier, and you just might see some poor blacked-out soul run onto the green and get tackled by security.

Fans have been known to chuck their adult beverages onto the green in jubilation. Just look what happened in 2022 when Sam Ryder dialed in for a hole-in-one. A beautiful drunken symphony.

You can see why everyone’s in such a hurry to get a piece of the 16th. Soak these scenes in, for they only come once a year. And take solace in the fact that Super Bowl Sunday is quickly approaching!
