It’s 2024, and Cody Johnson keeps outdoing himself.
The Texas country star has seen a wild rise to success over the past few years, going from Texas dance halls and hinky tonks, to becoming a household name in the state of Texas, and now across the country. I have to admit, I thought Johnson’s 2021 Human The Double Album would forever be his best work as a major label artist with Warner Music. However, my opinions quickly changed when he dropped his 2023 project Leather.
And the album’s lead single, “The Painter,” which is an intimate ode to his wife, Brandi, quickly resonated with country music fans.
The chorus speaks for itself:
“I don’t rememberLife before she came into the pictureBrought the beauty I was missin’ with herShowed me colors I ain’t never seenShe took chancesWith every wall I built, she saw a canvasI thank God every day for how He made herMy life was black and white but she’s the painter”
The song perfectly paints the picture of Cody and Brandi’s marriage, and how she changed his life for the better, and today, we have the official music video to go along with the song. The video kicks off at a honky tonk, when a man and a woman meet for the first time. He asks her to dance, and the two go out on the dance floor and dance to CoJo’s “Dance Her Home” and “Nothin’ On You.”
That’s when he hits here with the line:
“Will you marry me?”
The rest of the video shows the couple growing in their relationship, going from dating, to proposing, and starting a life together.
