Toby Keith has been battling stomach cancer for the last year, taking some time away from the stage as he underwent treatment before slowly easing back into the public eye the past few months.
A few months ago, Toby performed two surprise pop-up shows at Hollywood Corners, a bar that he owns in his home state of Oklahoma during what was supposed to just be a short rehearsal to test the waters.
Toby‘s first rehearsal turned into a 2 1/2 hour pop-up show. He sang all the hits plus the Bus Songs…Toby is back!
And more recently, Toby gave his first televised performance since his cancer diagnosis with a heartbreaking performance of “Don’t Let The Old Man In” at the People’s Choice Country Awards, where he also gave an update on his health and his future plans:
“I’ve walked some dark hallways. The Almighty’s riding shotgun.
But I feel pretty good. You have good days and bad days, but it’s a little bit of a rollercoaster. But I’m doing a lot better than I was this time last year.
I’ve always wrote with a prayer, and as long as I have Him with me, I’m cool. You just have to dig in, you don’t have a choice.”
Of course fans were thrilled when Toby announced last month that he would be hitting the road for the first time since his cancer battle, performing two shows at Dolby Live at the Park at MGM in Las Vegas – before quickly adding a third show when the first two sold out almost immediately.
Well this past weekend Toby finally made his long-awaited return for those shows in Vegas, and he didn’t disappoint the fans who were lucky enough to catch the Big Dog Daddy back on stage.
Videos from the three-night run show Toby working his way through all of the hits – and even performing a tribute to the late Jimmy Buffett with a cover of “Changes In Latitude, Changes In Attitude.”
And Toby seemed to be enjoying himself as much as ever onstage. At one point he even joked:
“You think I’m dying don’t you, you bitch? Me and the Almighty’s got this.”
