Noah Kahan and Kacey Musgraves teamed up for a reimagined, duet version of Noah’s song “She Calls Me Back,” and it’s even better than the original, in my very humble opinion.
Kahan and Musgraves both recently attended the 2023 Americana Honors & Awards, where Kacey presented an award and Noah performed, and while I definitely wouldn’t label Kahan as outright “country,” he definitely falls into that singer/songwriter category because of his writing and has more of a folk, alt-pop sound.
He’s released several cult-favorite albums since signing with Republic Records in 2017, but saw breakthrough commercial success with Stick Season, which he put out last year.
“She Calls Me Back” is a solo-write by Kahan and was featured on the Stick Season tracklist, and he shared a post on Instagram thanking Kacey for joining her on the song, saying she’s “the coolest person ever.”
He called it an honor to work with her, also saying that she “represents everything I love about music”:
“Kacey Musgraves is the coolest person ever. Not exaggerating when I say that during the stick season album process we would finish a song and I’d listen back and be like ‘can you imagine kacey on this??’
Having her sing on she calls me back is incredible, and being able to have her continue telling the story adds a whole new dimension to the song and what it means. I’m so grateful and honored, continually humbled that artists of this level have lent their voice to this album.
Kacey is cool as hell, brilliantly talented, and represents everything I love about music. She is a true artist and I can’t thank her enough for being a part of this song.”
Kacey has the most stunning, pure vocals, and of course, I loved this version of “She Calls Me Back,” which also features some new lyrics that make it even more fun to listen to as they go back and forth on the verses.
It’s the second feature she’s done in the last several months, also joining Zach Bryan on their #1 hit “I Remember Everything”(Zach and Noah also teamed up for “Sarah’s Place” recently too) which I was completely obsessed with.
It’s been a while since Kacey put out her last album Star-Crossed in 2021, and I’m hoping these cool features hint at the direction she’s going with possible new music sometime next year.
