It’s way too early to be crying on a Friday morning…

Yesterday, Stephen Wilson Jr. released a new music video for “Father’s Son,” which is beautiful tribute to Wilson’s late father, who raised him on his own and was an accomplished boxer who began training him at age seven through adulthood.

Wilson’s father was a notable boxer in his home state of Indiana, and even went on to become an Indiana State Golden Gloves finalist:

“You don’t have to put ‘Jr.’ after your name. It’s an optional suffix. But it is very powerful. It carries a lot of weight in the sport of boxing, because it means you’re an extension of your father.

I’m an artist now, but when I see my name on a show poster, I still look at it like a fight card.”

In terms of the music video, it’s pretty simple, with Stephen sitting in the middle of a boxing ring and singing his heart out about how much his dad meant to him.

It also features archival footage of his father boxing, alongside news clippings of his major boxing accomplishments and footage of Stephen Wilson Jr. boxing his brother.

The song and video combination is easily one of his most personal projects to date, and Wilson says it was a nostalgic and healing song to put out into the world:

“The making of video was a step into the time capsule, blurring the lines of the past and the present. Healing and nostalgic.

I fought my brother. Been many years since we put on those gloves and duked it out. Every punch conjured up our old man enough to make it well worth the hits.

I made it for our dad. It’s all him and I hope he loves it.”

Originally from Southern Indiana, Stephen has a really unique sound that draws inspiration from indie rock, grunge and country (dubbed “Death Cab for Country”), and he previously released his awesome bon aqua EP in March.
