HARDY Releases 8-Minute, Genre-Hopping New Track, “Man In The Box”

Hardy

Can’t say I’ve heard anything like it in my life.

Regardless of your thoughts on his output as a whole, it’s becoming increasingly clear that HARDY has become one of the most interesting figures in all of Nashville over the years. As an artist, he’s experienced some great success, recently scoring a #1 on country radio with “Favorite Country Song.” Additionally, he’s scored #1 hits with the likes of 2020’s “ONE BEER” (feat. Lauren Alaina and Devin Dawson) and 2023’s “TRUCK BED.”

Of course, that’s not even mentioning sleeper hits such as the Lainey Wilson collaboration, “wait in the truck,” and other Top 40 tracks, “Rednecker” and “GIVE HEAVEN SOME HELL.”

Though his success as a solo artist shouldn’t be ignored, it’s fairly safe to say that HARDY has scored the most success in his career as a songwriter. At this point, the Mississippi native is best-known for being a frequent collaborator with Morgan Wallen, penning hits such as “Up Down,” “Sand in My Boots,” “More Than My Hometown,” “7 Summers” and “I’m A Little Crazy.”

If there’s one thing that has become more than apparent throughout his career — as both a songwriter and artist — is the simple fact that the Mississippi native is willing to go in just about every direction humanly possible from a sonic perspective. Of course, you his biggest hits like the aforementioned “ONE BEER,” “wait in the truck” and “Rednecker” all of which fall into a more traditionally modern country sound. With that being said, however, we’ve seen HARDY wear his rock and nu metal influences on his sleeve throughout his career.

This was best shown on his 2023 sophomore album, the mockingbird & THE CROW, a 17-track project which was split down the middle with country songs being stylized in lowercase letters and the rock and metal adjacent songs receiving spelling in all caps.

While it’s nothing new to see HARDY blend these multiple styles together for one project, he’s yet to combine them all into one single track. That all changed today as he released one of the most unique, ambitious songs of the year, “Man In The Box,” which sees the 36-year-old singer/songwriter traverse not one but four different genres throughout its sprawling 7 minute and 53 second runtime.

Discussing the track, HARDY would call it the most creative thing that he’s ever done in his career, explain it is a “perfect representation” of the new phase of his career he’s currently entering.

“I’m very proud of this song. It’s by far, I think, the bravest, or at least the most creative, thing that I’ve done so far. Be prepared, it’s very different – it’s very long, and it’s a journey.

I’m stepping into a new phase of my career sonically, and this is a perfect representation of it, so I hope you enjoy it. I like to see if people can figure out what it’s about – it’s a little cryptic, and a little different than what I usually do. So, check it out. Hold on.”

At first, “Man In The Box” lulls you a bit. Backed by nothing but a fairly traditional acoustic guitar and some strings in the first quarter of the song, he sets the stage with the young narrator grappling with the death of his father and making a name for himself.

“Hell, I made it this far
With the hand I’ve been dealt
Might as well go make the best of my years
Might as well go make a name for myself”

After the first chorus, HARDY hits you with the first curveball of the track. Immediately, the track hard-transitions into an incredibly R&B, gospel-influenced production. Backed by a full choir and some saxophone, the second chorus sees the narrator stepping out into the world and making the most of the life he’s been given.

“How you gonna live?
You grow up in a hurry, even when you don’t even try
Whatcha gonna give
You’re rolling in the dirt, next thing you know there’s years gone by”

From there, he throws the second (and third) curveball. After a transition that features a classic-sounding, television preacher giving a sermon on God’s creation, the song then hard cuts to a swampy, rock-heavy production. It’s here that we’re introduced to the titular “man in the box.”

Giving the man a mythical, omnipresent nature, you can sense blood in the water as the narrator fears for his life. In the third chorus, he debates on whether he should stay or go.

“Should I listen
To my county line intuition?
Will I be the hero
Or killed on the scene? Tell me this
Does the king of the country keep his crown if he locks?

Just when you thought the track couldn’t switch up the production even more, HARDY keeps you on your toes with the biggest transition of “Man In The Box’s” runtime. After an extremely lengthy bridge that sees him pondering what the “man in the box” wants form him and repeating the third chorus, he then hard cuts to a pure numetal production, complete with some classic metal screams as he wails about the titular character.

Continuing the numetal sound, the narrator has his final confrontation with the “man in the box.” Facing him head on, it’s revealed he’s shot dead, drawing a parallel to his father who also died by the man’s hands years ago.

“Man in the box
What the hell have you done?
Last thing I heard was—
Now there’s blood in my lungs
Is this really how I die?
Do you do this for fun?
Make me a statue
Like father, like son”

If you couldn’t gather it from the context clues throughout, the entirety of “Man In The Box” tells the story of a young buck whose father was killed by a hunter (the “man in the box,” AKA a blind) before falling into the same exact fate as him years later. In other words, HARDY dropped a nearly 8-minute, genre-bending epic telling the tragic story of a lone deer in the woods.

If there’s one thing that cannot be taken away from the song, there’s truly never been a song even remotely similar.
