If you’re a girl who grew up listening to country radio in the 2000’s, then there’s a high likelihood this song defined your early love for country music.
I mean, even my friends who don’t necessarily love country will still absolutely belt “Cowboy Take Me Away” at the top of their lungs anytime it comes on. No matter how you feel about The Chicks’ politics and opinions outside of music, this song is, and always has been, a banger.
Written by The Chick’s fiddle player Martie Maguire along with Marcus Hummon, the song was released in November 1999 as the second single from their fan-favorite album Fly.
It peaked at #1 on the Billboard U.S. Hot Country Songs chart in 2000, and today, I want to share a cover of the ballad by the reigning ACM Female Artist of the Year, Carly Pearce.
She’s currently out on the road opening up for Kenny Chesney, and has done it a few times live on tour, but actually released a studio version back in 2020 you need to hear.
Of course, Carly sounds great per the usual, and even put her own little Kentucky spin on the production:
The Chicks, formerly known as the Dixie Chicks, recently postponed a couple weekends of tour stops due frontwoman Natalie Maines’ vocal issues, but they’re back to their regularly scheduled dates now and continuing their cross-country trek.
I’m actually supposed to see them in a couple weeks here in North Carolina, so if you see me belting my little heart out to this (and maybe shedding a few tears), mind ya business…
