At tonight’s ACM Awards, Morgan took home the trophy for Album of the Year at tonight’s show, after being excluded from last year’s awards shows (and this year’s Grammy Awards) in the wake of his racial slur scandal last year, leaving questions about whether he would be welcomed back into country music by the industry. (Dangerous was also nominated for Album of the Year at last year’s CMA Awards so as not to exclude the album’s songwriters and producers, but ultimately lost to Chris Stapleton’s Starting Over).
But this time Morgan took home the hardware – and took the stage donning his signature mullet and a suit that some on Twitter were comparing to Beauty and the Beast…
During his speech, Morgan thanked the fans for all of their support over the last year or so with everything he’s been through:
“I wrote some stuff down. When I started this album, I was a kid. By the time I put it out, I was a father and that’s become more important to me than anything else.
To my son, this album and this award will signify that his daddy was a fighter and he chased his dreams and worked hard to make them a reality. I wanna say a special thank you to all the songwriters, producers and musicians that played on this album, I wish they were standing here next to me now.
This project would not be complete without each of them. I’d also like to thank my good Lord and savior, Jesus Christ, my family, my close friends, my band, my team in Nashville, country radio, and everyone who was shown me grace along the way.
Most importantly, I have to address my fans personally and directly: Thank you, thank you, thank you!”
