When you think about the artists that have exploded onto the scene in the last year, Morgan Wade is easily near the top of the list… and her stock is still going up… FAST.
But she has a pretty unique story when it comes to how she got her start in the music business…
She found her very first band on Craigslist.
While not necessarily the safest option, especially for a young girl in college, she found herself meeting five random men in a basement for band practice as a result:
“I was 19 and started a band on Craigslist. And so the first time I like sang in front of people, I just went down in this basement with five random men that I found on Craigslist to start a band.
That was the first time I sang in front of people, and then um… that was the band I took with me to play my first show.”
She explains that her hometown of Floyd, Virginia, didn’t have a lot of options in terms of where to find things or sell them, so that was her best bet at the time.
Apparently, she’d been using the site since she was a pre-teen, so she already knew how it all worked:
“Where I grew up, the only options to like get stuff, is you would get on Craigslist to find things. I remember selling a futon on Craigslist when I was like 12.
I just like made the post and put my home address on there and like sold this guy a futon… I was 12. Now I look back and I’m like, ‘That’s weird.’
And it probably wasn’t the safest thing to do either, but it worked out for her, I guess. Why a 12-year-old was even selling a futon to begin with I have no idea, but it makes for a pretty funny story now.
Around the time she moved an hour away from home to go to college, she decided that she needed a band around her if she was gonna make something happen in terms of her music career. So she went to the musicians section on Craigslist and just started answering ads.
Eventually, she came across an ad for a band that needed a lead singer, so she responded to see if they’d be interested in letting her take over. And in another not-so-safe and move, she went to a random house with a bunch of guys in a basement to try out:
“I just remember there was a guy standing out front with sunglasses on at like eight o’clock at night smoking weed.
That was really normal. I just went on in the house, and they were like ‘Yeah, down in the basement.’ So I went down there and there were like five guys down there, but here we are.”
You really can’t make stuff like this up… I’d say it worked out for her, though, seeing as she’s a rising superstar in country music with an incredibly unique sound who just released a stellar debut record, Reckless, last year.
