Fireworks at Martinsville.
Kyle Larson came into the day locked into the championship round of the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs, and after winning the first two stages today at Martinsville, Chase Elliott locked himself into a playoff spot as well.
In the final stage, Denny Hamlin, a playoff driver with a lot of points, and Alex Bowman, a non-playoff driver, were battling for first place. And just a few cars behind them Martin Truex Jr, Kyle Busch and Brad Keselowski were trying to take that final spot.
With just 7 laps to go Alex Bowman took out race leader Denny Hamlin, spinning the #11 car into the wall.
Thankfully for Denny Hamlin, he still had enough points to secure a playoff spot with a 24th finish, but no way in hell he was was gonna let Bowman celebrate that win after a move like that.
When Bowman went for his finish line burnout, Hamlin put a stop to it in a hurry.
Double birds… you gotta love it.
It sounds like most race fans thought it was a bullshit move, but I have to admit, I like the fire from Denny Hamlin.
But if that didn’t send a message, Hamlin made it crystal clear in the post race interview:
“He’s just a hack, just an absolute hack… he gets his ass kicked by his teammates every week. He’s fucking terrible, he’s just terrible.
He sees one opportunity and he takes it… he didn’t wanna race us there. I moved up as high as I could on the race track to give him all the room I could and he still can’t drive.”
Either way, Denny will be heading to Phoenix next Sunday looking to win his first Cup Series Championship and Alex Bowman won’t so I think he got the last laugh.
Kyle Larson, Chase Elliott and Martin Truex Jr. will also be competing for a Cup Series Championship next Sunday, November 7th, at Phoenix Raceway.
