Taylor Sheridan isn’t just setting up shop in Texas… he’s quickly becoming one of the state’s largest landowners.
The writer, director and creator of shows like Yellowstone, its prequels 1883 and 1923, and his most recent hit Landman, has long been a supporter of the state of Texas. And it’s the state he currently calls home, living in Weatherford, Texas at his Bosque Ranch. He also sometimes resides at his 6666 Ranch in Guthrie, Texas – which was featured in the Yellowstone series.
It’s actually those two ranches together that bring his total landowner acreage up to a staggering 267,000 acres. And that’s just in Texas. He also owns 179-acre ranch in Wyoming – called the Papa’s Creek Ranch – which he bought in late 2024.
If you were to look at the 2025 Land Report, according to My San Antonio, Sheridan ranks No. 49 out of the Top 100 Landowners in America. That makes him one of the biggest land owners in the United States, and one of the premiere land owners in Texas (even though he still sits outside the Top 5 in the Lone Star State).
Here’s how Sheridan’s official page on the Land Report rankings reads:
“The TV and film producer synonymous with the West these days has expanded his own ranching empire to the Cowboy State… Sheridan owns approximately 267,000 acres of ranch land in Texas and ranks No. 49 on the 2025 Land Report 100. This includes his ownership interest in the famed 6666 Ranch. His properties serve multiple purposes: cattle ranching, horse breeding, and film location work, most notably for ‘Yellowstone’ and ‘1883.’”
It’s believed that his purchase of the historic 6666 Ranch had a price tag of around $330 million, and Sheridan has been very open about what had to happen and what had to go right for him to make the purchase. In fact, he’s admitted that he was contemplating retirement before he decided he wanted to purchase the Texas property.
The only problem? He was about $300 million short.
That’s actually what led Sheridan to make the the multi-year deal with Paramount around 2022. While he was on the Rodeo Time podcast, he explained how that deal with the network ended up being perfect timing:
“Paramount had been after me to make an overall deal. They were terrified that I was going to go to greener pastures and leave them and go somewhere else, which I probably was. So, they’d been for years trying to get me to sign an exclusive deal with Paramount, and I’d said no.
But once this happened, I called them and I said, ‘You know what? I think I’m ready to make an overall deal.’ They said, ‘That’s great. Do you have a number in mind?’ And I said, ‘Why, yes, I do. I sure do.'”
So one could argue that Sheridan has Paramount to thank for making him one of the biggest landowners in Texas. The 267,000 acres that he owns is actually bigger than Austin – the Capital of Texas – which only stretches to about 204,000. It also happens to be more than the city of Dallas, which comes in around 247,000 acres. I wonder how many times he throws that fun fact out there when he’s hanging at either of his Texas ranches?
Although, while he may be a big dog in Texas, he has nothing on his own character, John Dutton, which based on context clues from the show figures to be somewhere north of 700,000 acres. According to the show, the ranch was about the size of the state of Rhode Island, which is over 775,000 acres. Jamie mentions that since he became an attorney, they added over 200,000 acres, and at another point in the show, it’s called it’s “the biggest ranch in the US under one fence,” which would make it bigger than the WT Waggoner at 535,000 acres.
Of course, that’s just a TV show and the real Chief Joseph Ranch in Darby, Montana, where the show is actually filmed, is only about 2,000 acres.
